In a historic move for global education, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are expanding internationally, with Nigeria set to host the first-ever IIT campus in West Africa. This initiative marks a major milestone in India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which envisions Indian universities establishing campuses abroad to promote knowledge exchange and academic collaboration.
India–Nigeria Educational Collaboration Strengthens
Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, confirmed the plan following discussions with the Indian High Commission in Abuja. The project underscores the shared commitment of India and Nigeria to advance cooperation in science, technology, and innovation education.
The IIT Nigeria campus will be established at the Federal Government Academy (FGA), Suleja, also known as the Nigerian Academy for the Gifted. The location was selected for its strong academic background and potential to evolve into a regional hub for science and technology education in West Africa.
According to a statement by Nigeria’s Ministry of Education on X (formerly Twitter), the academy will be upgraded into a “Centre of Excellence” with Indian collaboration. India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhishek Singh, revealed that the campus will follow the IIT Madras–Zanzibar model, wherein India will provide faculty, curriculum, and academic guidance, while Nigeria will contribute infrastructure and logistical support.
A joint Indo-Nigerian team will oversee the establishment of the new campus, faculty recruitment, and course design. The first academic session is expected to begin in 2026, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering, technology, and research.
Part of India’s Global Education Expansion
The upcoming IIT Nigeria campus forms part of India’s larger strategy to globalise its education system. This effort gained momentum with the launch of IIT Madras–Zanzibar in 2023 — India’s first overseas IIT — followed by IIT Delhi–Abu Dhabi in 2024.
India is now in advanced talks to establish future IIT campuses in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the United Kingdom, solidifying its role as a global education leader.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan previously stated that India seeks to “share its educational strengths with partner nations while welcoming international students and researchers to India.” This aligns with NEP 2020’s internationalisation framework, which promotes joint degrees, research collaborations, and faculty exchanges.
