IIT Guwahati to Begin GATE 2026 Registration from August 25

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) will begin the GATE 2026 registration process on August 25, 2025. The registration link will be activated on the official GATE website for candidates aspiring to secure admission to postgraduate engineering and science programmes at IITs, NITs, IIITs, and several universities across India.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE 2026) is not only a gateway for MTech admissions but also plays a crucial role in public sector undertaking (PSU) recruitments. Several leading PSUs, including BHEL, IOCL, HPCL, ONGC, and NTPC, use GATE scores for hiring engineers and technical professionals.

GATE 2026: Exam Dates

As per the official schedule, the GATE 2026 exam will be held on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026. The national-level entrance test will be conducted online in computer-based mode across multiple test centers in India.

The exam will include around 30 papers in engineering, technology, and science disciplines such as Computer Science (CS), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), Civil Engineering (CE), and Electronics & Communication (EC), among others. Candidates will also have the option to appear for two papers, subject to the two-paper combination list released by IIT Guwahati.

To complete the registration, applicants need to upload the following documents in the prescribed format and size:

  • Aadhaar card or any other valid ID proof
  • Caste certificate (SC/ST)
  • PwD certificate (if applicable)
  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • Scanned signature image

GATE 2026 Registration Fees

As per the notification, the application fee for GATE 2026 is:

  • ₹1,000 for Female, SC, ST, and PwD candidates
  • ₹2,000 for General and OBC category candidates

The fee must be paid online to successfully submit the application form.

GATE Exam Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture from a recognized institution.
  • Final-year students of BTech, BE, or equivalent programmes are also eligible.
  • There is no minimum percentage requirement and no age limit to appear for the exam.
  • Candidates can attempt the exam multiple times as there is no restriction on the number of attempts.

Previous Year Statistics

The GATE 2023 exam witnessed around 6.8 lakh candidates registering, while in 2022 more than 7 lakh candidates appeared, out of which only 1,26,813 cleared the exam. The overall pass percentage stood at 17.82%, highlighting the competitive nature of this national-level test.
