IIT Bombay Launches WINGS Scholarship to Empower Women in STEM Education

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has announced a groundbreaking initiative to empower women pursuing higher education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The new scholarship programme, WINGS — Women INspiring Growth in STEM, is designed to provide full tuition support for undergraduate women students at IIT Bombay. Backed by IIT Bombay alumnus Bharat Desai and his wife Neerja Sethi, this initiative aims to ensure that financial barriers do not hinder young women from achieving their academic goals.

WINGS Scholarship Programme: An Overview

The WINGS scholarship at IIT Bombay will cover the full tuition fees of female undergraduate students, helping them focus entirely on their academic journey. By targeting young women, especially from rural and underrepresented backgrounds, this initiative seeks to create an equitable learning environment. The first batch of WINGS scholars is expected to commence their studies in the 2026–2027 academic year.

According to IIT Bombay, the scholarship is not just about financial aid but also about building a strong pipeline of future leaders in science and technology. The programme is expected to encourage applications from women who may otherwise face economic constraints in accessing world-class education.

Transforming Women’s Education in India

In a press release, IIT Bombay highlighted the transformative power of the initiative, stating:

“This scholarship programme has the power to transform women’s education in India by opening doors to opportunity, fostering leadership, and serving as a catalyst that inspires and accelerates the creation of other programmes with lasting impact.”

This initiative positions IIT Bombay as a pioneer among Indian institutes in addressing gender disparity in STEM education through large-scale scholarship support.

Leadership Voices on the WINGS Scholarship

Emphasising the importance of accessible education, Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, said:

“Financial constraints should never determine a student’s future. This scholarship initiative is a commitment to ensuring that talented young women in STEM have the freedom to pursue their aspirations without limitations. It is a step toward a more equitable and diverse student community at IIT Bombay, which will shape the future of science and technology.”

For alumnus Bharat Desai, who co-founded the initiative with his wife Neerja Sethi, the scholarship is a way to give back to society and empower the next generation:

“Education is the most powerful tool for change. By removing financial obstacles, we are unleashing the talent and determination of young women who will drive the future of innovation and progress in India.”

A Step Toward Inclusive STEM Education

The IIT Bombay WINGS scholarship is expected to inspire similar initiatives across India, encouraging more women to enter STEM fields where gender imbalance has historically been high. By offering sustained financial support, IIT Bombay hopes to nurture an inclusive and diverse academic environment that will shape future innovation.

The WINGS — Women INspiring Growth in STEM scholarship marks a major milestone in India’s journey toward gender equality in higher education. By empowering young women through full tuition support, IIT Bombay is not only investing in individual students but also strengthening the nation’s scientific and technological future.
