In a landmark move set to transform India’s digital infrastructure, Google has announced plans to establish Asia’s largest data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project involves a colossal investment of ₹51,000 crore (approximately $6 billion), marking one of the tech giant’s most ambitious initiatives in the region.
The upcoming facility will boast a massive 1 gigawatt (GW) capacity, making it the largest of its kind in Asia. In addition to the data centre, the project includes the development of supporting energy infrastructure, which is vital for powering such a large-scale operation. Significantly, Google plans to allocate around ₹17,000 crore (about $2 billion) of the total investment specifically toward renewable energy initiatives. This aligns with the company’s global commitment to sustainability and reflects its mission to operate all its data centres and campuses on carbon-free energy by 2030.
The project is part of Alphabet Inc.’s broader strategy to ramp up digital infrastructure globally. In April 2025, the parent company announced a $75 billion global investment plan aimed at expanding its data centre footprint to support the accelerating digital transformation across the world. As part of this plan, key facilities are also being developed in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand—strategic locations in Southeast Asia experiencing booming internet adoption and data demand.
Visakhapatnam’s selection as the site for this mega data centre project underscores India’s growing importance in the global digital economy. The city, with its strategic coastal location, robust power connectivity, and improving infrastructure, offers a conducive environment for high-tech investments. Moreover, the state of Andhra Pradesh has been proactive in promoting ease of doing business, digital innovation, and renewable energy adoption, which made it a natural choice for Google’s expansion plans.
Once operational, the Visakhapatnam data centre will significantly boost India’s cloud computing capabilities, supporting services like Google Cloud, YouTube, Search, and AI-based applications for Indian enterprises, start-ups, and public sector organizations. The facility is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases.
Speaking on the announcement, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, stated, “India is central to our global growth plans. This investment reflects our commitment to supporting India’s digital future with infrastructure that is secure, scalable, and sustainable.”
The renewable energy component of the project is particularly noteworthy. Google aims to build solar and wind energy facilities to meet the data centre’s electricity requirements, thereby contributing to India’s clean energy goals and reducing the environmental impact of digital expansion.
As the global demand for data storage, processing, and digital services continues to surge, this project not only strengthens India’s position as a digital powerhouse but also sets a new benchmark in sustainable infrastructure development. With construction set to begin by early 2026, the Visakhapatnam data centre is poised to become a cornerstone of Asia’s digital future.
