India’s electronic toll payment system, FASTag, is set for a major upgrade starting August 15, 2025, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will officially launch the FASTag Annual Pass, a prepaid toll plan aimed at easing highway travel for frequent commuters driving private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans.
What is the FASTag Annual Pass?
The FASTag Annual Pass is a new initiative designed to simplify toll payments on national highways and expressways managed by NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Instead of paying toll charges each time a vehicle passes through a plaza, private vehicle owners can now pay a one-time fee of Rs 3,000 that covers up to 200 toll crossings or one year of travel, whichever comes first.
Announcing the pass earlier this year, Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari emphasized the scheme’s intent to address long-standing concerns related to toll plazas within a 60 km range. He highlighted that the pass would help reduce wait times, ease congestion, minimize payment disputes, and provide a faster, smoother travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners.
How Does the Pass Work?
Unlike purchasing a new FASTag, the Annual Pass will be linked directly to the user’s existing FASTag, provided it is active and associated with the vehicle’s registration number. This means there is no need for repeated online recharges, making it especially beneficial for daily commuters and frequent travelers.
However, the pass is non-transferable and valid only for the registered vehicle linked to the FASTag. It works exclusively on national highways and expressways under NHAI and MoRTH jurisdiction.
How to Buy the FASTag Annual Pass?
Purchasing the FASTag Annual Pass is straightforward and can be done online by following these steps:
- Visit the Rajmarg Yatra app or the NHAI/MoRTH official website.
- Log in by entering your vehicle number and FASTag ID. Ensure your FASTag is active and correctly installed.
- Pay the Rs 3,000 fee using UPI, debit/credit card, or net banking.
- The pass will automatically be linked to your existing FASTag, and you will receive an SMS confirmation on August 15, 2025, confirming activation.
Where Will the FASTag Annual Pass Work?
The Annual Pass is valid at toll plazas on National Highways (NH) and National Expressways (NE) operated by NHAI. Key routes include the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, Mumbai–Nashik, Mumbai–Surat, and Mumbai–Ratnagiri corridors.
For state highways or municipal toll roads, the regular FASTag system continues to apply, with toll charges as usual. Examples include the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway (Samruddhi Mahamarg), Atal Setu, Agra–Lucknow Expressway, Bengaluru–Mysore Expressway, and Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway, which are managed by state authorities.
Travelers are advised to check with local toll authorities if unsure about coverage.
Important Rules and Limitations
- The pass is only available for private vehicles (cars, jeeps, vans). It is not valid for commercial vehicles.
- It is non-transferable and non-refundable, tied strictly to one registered vehicle.
- Valid only on eligible NHAI/MoRTH national highways and expressways.
- Once 200 toll crossings are used or the one-year validity expires, the pass automatically switches back to regular pay-per-use FASTag.
- The pass does not auto-renew; users must reapply upon expiry.
With the FASTag Annual Pass, NHAI aims to bring convenience and efficiency to highway travel, reducing toll plaza congestion and enhancing the overall journey experience for millions of private vehicle owners across India.
