In a landmark decision during the ICC Annual Conference 2025 held in Singapore, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has been awarded the hosting rights for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Finals in 2027, 2029, and 2031. This announcement follows the ECB’s acclaimed execution of the previous WTC finals in 2021, 2023, and 2025, which received widespread praise for their organization, crowd management, and cricketing atmosphere.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) cited England’s deep-rooted cricketing heritage, world-class stadium infrastructure, and passionate fan base as key factors behind the decision. Iconic venues like The Oval and Lord’s, which have successfully hosted previous finals, are expected to continue serving as the spiritual home of Test cricket during the next three championship cycles.
The move underscores the ICC’s commitment to strengthening the appeal and prestige of Test cricket, often hailed as the game’s purest format. With the ECB at the helm, the WTC Finals are set to enjoy consistency, high standards, and enhanced global visibility.
Speaking at the announcement, ICC Chairman Greg Barclay noted, “England has demonstrated its ability to deliver world-class events with great fan engagement and impeccable logistics. We are confident that with this continuity, the World Test Championship will only grow in stature and global reach.”
ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould expressed pride in the board’s selection, stating, “This is a significant honor for English cricket and a testament to our enduring love for Test cricket. We are committed to making these finals a true celebration of the format, both for players and fans worldwide.”
The decision also aligns with the ICC’s strategic goals to promote Test cricket, particularly at a time when shorter formats dominate the global cricketing calendar. By entrusting the finals to a nation known for its historic rivalries, knowledgeable spectators, and vibrant cricketing culture, the ICC aims to maintain the WTC’s status as a marquee event in the international calendar.
As preparations begin for the 2027 final, cricket enthusiasts can look forward to another era of thrilling five-day contests, steeped in tradition and played on the grandest stages of world cricket.
