DSERT, Karnataka releases Lesson Based Assessment (LBA) implementation Guidelines for Classes 1 to 10

In a major step towards enhancing student learning outcomes and bringing consistency in evaluations, the Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT), Karnataka, has introduced Lesson Based Assessment (LBA) from the academic year 2025–26. This innovative assessment initiative is applicable to students of Classes 1 to 10 studying under the state curriculum.

To ensure effective implementation of this reform, a comprehensive Lesson Based Assessment Question Bank has been developed and made available on the DSERT official portal. This question bank aims to confirm and support learning after every lesson, helping teachers assess the grasp of concepts by students and take timely action for improvement.

STRUCTURED METHODOLOGY

The entire syllabus from Classes 1 to 10 has been carefully mapped with respective learning outcomes and lesson objectives. Questions have been framed to align with these outcomes, taking into consideration the format, complexity, and cognitive level of the learners.

For Classes 1 to 7, both objective and descriptive type questions are included in the bank. These ensure the holistic development of students’ comprehension and expression.
For Classes 8 to 10, the bank follows the SSLC exam pattern, consisting of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), 1 to 5-mark descriptive questions, and more to reflect board exam standards.

EVALUATION BLUEPRINT

The use of the LBA Question Bank is mandatory in all formative and summative assessments such as: FA-1, FA-2, FA-3, FA-4, SA-1, Internal evaluations, Model question papers, Preparatory tests, Annual examinations, CCE-related activities

Unit Tests (Lesson-Based Evaluations) will now be standard across grades:

  • Classes 1–5: A 25-mark question paper consisting of all types of questions will be prepared.
  • Classes 6–7: A 20-mark question paper selected from the Lesson Based Assessment (LBA), plus 5 marks from Marusinchana Handbook (total 25 marks).
  • Classes 8–10: Similarly, a 25-mark test will be conducted (20 marks from the LBA bank + 5 marks from Marusinchana Handbook), using board-level question formats.

DIGITAL INTEGRATION AND MONITORING

A software module within SATS (Student Achievement Tracking System) has been developed to enter LBA scores, which will be monitored for effectiveness. A YouTube Live training session has been scheduled for July 19, 2025, to guide teachers and stakeholders on the system and its implementation.

REMEDIAL MEASURES AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Using SATS analysis, students will be categorized as Above Average, Average, and Below Average based on their LBA performance. Remedial teaching strategies will be implemented for below-average learners using community and local resource support.

This new assessment system reinforces continuous monitoring, timely interventions, and stakeholder collaboration to ensure no student is left behind. It is a forward-looking move toward building a robust, inclusive, and learning-focused educational environment in Karnataka.
