Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Announces Atal Canteens at Rs 5 Meals

In her first Independence Day speech, Delhi Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta unveiled two major welfare initiatives aimed at improving the lives of the city’s economically weaker sections. The most notable announcement was the launch of Atal Canteens, a subsidized meal program offering food at just Rs 5 for workers and slum residents, alongside a promise to provide pucca houses for all slum dwellers in the national capital.

Atal Canteens to Provide Affordable Meals at Rs 5

The newly announced Atal Canteens scheme is set to transform food accessibility for Delhi’s marginalized communities. According to CM Rekha Gupta, 100 Atal Canteens will be established across Delhi’s slum clusters, targeting the daily needs of lakhs of residents who struggle to afford nutritious meals.

The Delhi government has allocated Rs 100 crore for this ambitious project, which will cover around 700 big and small slums in the city. The canteens will serve freshly prepared, hygienic meals at just Rs 5 per plate, making food both affordable and accessible for laborers, daily-wage earners, and families living in slums.

Objective of Atal Canteens

The primary objective of Atal Canteens is to ensure food security and nutritional well-being of the economically weaker sections of society. With rising food inflation affecting poor households, the scheme is designed to provide low-cost, wholesome meals that will directly benefit thousands of underprivileged families.

CM Rekha Gupta emphasized that the initiative is also a tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, launched in honor of his birth centenary. “The vision of Atal Canteens is not just to serve food but to serve dignity, ensuring no one in Delhi goes hungry,” she remarked during her Independence Day address at the Red Fort grounds in Delhi.

Pucca Houses for Slum Residents

Alongside the Atal Canteen initiative, CM Rekha Gupta also announced a comprehensive housing plan for slum dwellers. She promised that all slum residents will be provided with pucca houses, ensuring secure shelter and improved living conditions. The government is expected to roll out a detailed roadmap for the housing scheme in the coming months.

This housing pledge is expected to cover both rehabilitation of existing slums and construction of new housing complexes to accommodate displaced families. The scheme aims to not only address shelter needs but also uplift the overall quality of life in Delhi’s underprivileged areas.

Transforming Social Welfare in Delhi

With the introduction of Atal Canteens and the pucca housing scheme, Delhi’s new CM Rekha Gupta has outlined a strong vision for social welfare. These measures highlight the government’s commitment to inclusive development, focusing on the most vulnerable sections of society.

The twin initiatives are being hailed as a landmark step towards poverty alleviation in Delhi, ensuring access to affordable food and safe housing for lakhs of slum residents. If implemented effectively, they could set a new benchmark for welfare schemes in India’s metropolitan cities.
