In a ceremonial handover held at INS Venduruthy, Kochi, Commodore Varghese Mathew officially assumed charge as the new Naval Officer-in-Charge (Kerala), succeeding Commodore Jose Vikas. The ceremony, held with traditional military decorum, marked a significant leadership transition within the Southern Naval Command, the premier training command of the Indian Navy.
With nearly three decades of distinguished service, Commodore Mathew brings with him a wealth of operational and strategic experience, particularly in the specialized domain of Gunnery and Missile Warfare. His vast expertise is expected to provide a fresh impetus to naval operations and training activities in the region.
An alumnus of the Indian Naval Academy, Commodore Mathew has served in various key appointments both at sea and ashore. Over the years, he has commanded frontline warships and held critical staff roles, contributing to the Navy’s modernization and operational planning. His extensive background in weapon systems and maritime warfare places him in a strong position to enhance the operational readiness and coastal defence infrastructure along the Kerala coastline.
The Southern Naval Command, headquartered in Kochi, plays a pivotal role in the Indian Navy’s training ecosystem, responsible for shaping future officers and sailors. Under Commodore Mathew’s leadership, this command is expected to witness renewed focus on training excellence, joint operations, and inter-agency coordination to safeguard India’s maritime interests in the region.
Kerala’s coastal location along the Arabian Sea holds significant strategic value for India’s maritime security. As Naval Officer-in-Charge, Commodore Mathew will oversee naval infrastructure, community engagement, port security, and coordination with civil authorities across the state. His tenure is anticipated to strengthen ties between the Indian Navy and Kerala’s civilian maritime stakeholders, including ports, fisheries, and disaster management agencies.
In his address during the ceremony, Commodore Mathew expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the Navy’s core values of duty, honour, and courage. He also acknowledged the contributions of his predecessor, Commodore Jose Vikas, in enhancing maritime operations and community engagement in the region.
With this change in command, the Indian Navy looks forward to enhanced operational synergy and training standards under Commodore Mathew’s capable leadership in one of India’s most strategically vital coastal states.
