The Government of India has taken a major step in strengthening the Public Distribution System (PDS) with the nationwide rollout of the “Anna-Chakra” Supply Chain Optimisation Tool. According to Union Minister Smt. Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, the tool has been successfully implemented in 30 out of 31 targeted States and Union Territories, with the exception of Manipur.
What is the “Anna-Chakra” Supply Chain Optimisation Tool?
The Anna-Chakra Tool is a digital system designed to improve efficiency in the transportation and distribution of food grains under the Public Distribution System (PDS). It leverages route optimisation algorithms to streamline logistics, reduce unnecessary mileage, and improve delivery timelines.
This technology-driven reform ensures that essential commodities such as rice, wheat, and other food grains reach Fair Price Shops (FPS) in a cost-effective and timely manner.
Key Benefits of the Anna-Chakra Tool
The Centre has highlighted several significant advantages of implementing this supply chain optimisation tool:
- Annual Savings of ₹250 Crore – By optimizing transport routes across states, the system is expected to reduce fuel consumption and logistical inefficiencies, leading to massive annual savings in transportation costs.
- Reduction in CO₂ Emissions – With shorter and more efficient routes, the system directly contributes to lower carbon emissions, aligning with India’s climate change commitments and sustainability goals.
- Enhanced PDS Efficiency – Streamlined delivery processes mean that food grains reach beneficiaries more quickly and consistently, improving the effectiveness of the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
- Transparent Operations – By integrating data-driven monitoring and real-time analytics, the tool enhances accountability and reduces the scope for irregularities in grain transportation.
Nationwide Implementation Status
Out of the 31 targeted States and UTs, the Anna-Chakra Supply Chain Optimisation Tool has been successfully adopted by 30, with Manipur being the only state yet to implement it. The government has assured that efforts are underway to extend the tool’s reach to all states in the near future, ensuring pan-India coverage of this technological intervention.
Supporting India’s Climate Change Goals
The tool’s contribution to CO₂ emissions reduction is in line with India’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and its push toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. By lowering fuel use in the transportation of food grains, the system contributes both to cost savings and environmental sustainability.
The introduction of the “Anna-Chakra” Supply Chain Optimisation Tool marks a milestone in modernizing India’s Public Distribution System (PDS). With its successful rollout in 30 States and UTs, the initiative not only improves logistical efficiency and reduces costs but also advances India’s green goals by cutting carbon emissions. This data-driven approach will play a crucial role in ensuring that the benefits of food security reach every household in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.
