The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that all affiliated schools across the country will be rated and recognized based on a comprehensive 60-indicator survey as part of the Swachh Evam Harit Vidyalaya Rating (SHVR) 2025-26. The initiative aims to foster a clean, green, and inclusive school environment, in line with the Government of India’s vision for sustainable and healthy educational spaces.
To facilitate this programme, CBSE has launched a dedicated online portal and mobile application, enabling schools to participate digitally, conduct self-assessments, and monitor their progress.
Mandatory Participation by September 30, 2025
As per CBSE guidelines, participation in the SHVR 2025-26 will be mandatory for all affiliated schools, and the last date to submit entries is September 30, 2025. Schools can choose between the mobile app or web-portal for convenience.
For mobile participation, schools can visit shvr.education.gov.in to scan the QR codes provided for Android and iOS app downloads. For web-portal submissions, institutions can use the Login/Signup option available on the homepage.
About SHVR 2025-26
The SHVR 2025-26 was officially launched by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as an upgraded, universal, and more inclusive version of the earlier Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar (SVP). It covers all schools with a UDISE code nationwide, including Government, Government-aided, Private, Residential, Tribal, Minority, centrally-run institutions such as Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVS), and all CBSE-affiliated schools.
The programme focuses on self-assessment and improvement across six key categories:
- Water
- Toilets
- Handwashing with Soap
- Operation & Maintenance
- Behaviour Change & Capacity Building
- Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) Activities
These categories align with India’s broader goals of promoting hygiene, sustainability, and behavioural transformation in the education sector.
Recognition and Awards
The Ministry of Education has announced four categories of recognition, with certificates of merit to be awarded at different levels. At the district level, eight schools will be considered for nomination to the State Level, including:
- Rural Category-I: 3 schools
- Rural Category-II: 3 schools
- Urban Category-I: 1 school
- Urban Category-II: 1 school
This tiered recognition structure ensures that both rural and urban schools get equitable opportunities for acknowledgment, regardless of size or resources.
Driving Sustainable Change in Schools
The SHVR 2025-26 aims not only to assess but also to empower schools to take proactive steps toward improving their environmental and hygiene standards. Through the 60-indicator framework, institutions can identify gaps, plan interventions, and implement best practices in sanitation, water management, and sustainability.
By making participation compulsory and linking it with national recognition, CBSE hopes to instil a culture of accountability, environmental stewardship, and community involvement within India’s school ecosystem.
With the September 30 deadline approaching, schools are urged to begin their self-assessment process promptly, ensuring their contribution to a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive educational future.
