CBSE Clarifies on Additional Subject Option for Private Candidates

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a detailed clarification regarding the “Additional Subject” option in the 2025 private candidate application forms. Many students had raised concerns about the missing additional subject choice this year. CBSE confirmed on Monday that private candidates must meet the same academic and attendance requirements as regular students if they wish to appear for any extra subject in Class 10 or Class 12 Board Exams.

Two-Year Study Requirement for Additional Subjects

CBSE explained that Classes 10 and 12 exams are the culmination of a two-year programme—Classes 9 and 10 for Class 10 Board exams and Classes 11 and 12 for Class 12 Board exams. Every subject, including an additional subject, has to be studied for both years. Students who have not completed this two-year study period are not eligible to sit for that subject in the CBSE Board Examination 2025.

Attendance and Internal Assessment Mandatory

According to CBSE, 75% attendance is compulsory for all candidates, including private students. This rule ensures that students actively participate in classroom learning, not just appear for the final board exam.

Another key requirement is internal assessment, which has become integral under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Internal assessments are carried out throughout the two years of study. Without attending school, students cannot complete the internal assessment process, and without those marks, CBSE cannot declare the result. Even regular students lacking internal assessment are placed in the “Essential Repeat” category.

Limits on Additional Subjects in Class 10 and 12

CBSE allows Class 10 students to choose up to two additional subjects, while Class 12 students may choose only one additional subject. However, these subjects can only be offered if schools have CBSE approval, qualified teachers, and proper facilities such as laboratories. If a school is not authorised to offer a particular subject, students cannot take it as a main or additional subject in CBSE exams.

Eligibility for Private Candidates

Only those students who had previously opted for an additional subject and were placed in the “Compartment” or “Essential Repeat” category can appear as private candidates for that subject. CBSE stated, “A student who is not meeting the above conditions is not eligible for examinations in additional subjects in Board Examinations as a private candidate.”

CBSE vs. Open Schooling

The Board also reminded students that CBSE operates through regular classroom teaching, unlike the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), which follows an open and distance-learning model. Thus, as per the Board’s guidelines, the Additional Subject option is not available to those who have not completed the required two-year study, attendance, and internal assessment, for more details CLICK HERE
