The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has unveiled plans for a major expansion of Namma Metro, with a proposed 72-kilometre corridor stretching from Kalena Agrahara on Bannerghatta Road to Kadugodi Tree Park near Whitefield. The project will include a branch line connecting the upcoming international sports complex at Surya City Phase 4 in Anekal taluk, marking one of the city’s largest metro expansions to date.
The main corridor, originally planned as a 68-km line, will traverse key localities including Bannerghatta, Jigani, Attibele, Sarjapur, Dommasandra Circle, and Varthur Kodi, covering several of Bengaluru’s major IT and residential hubs.
BMRCL’s Feasibility Study and Route Details
A feasibility study for the corridor has been completed by Delhi-based Introsoft Solutions Pvt Ltd, covering critical aspects such as alignment, ridership projections, traffic demand, land acquisition, and cost estimation. The study forms part of BMRCL’s 210.9-km masterplan, being prepared under the guidance of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
Following the Karnataka Cabinet’s approval of a ₹2,350-crore international sports complex in Surya City Phase 4 at Indlavadi, BMRCL has been instructed to integrate a metro link to the sports hub. As a result, a 3.5–4 km spur (branch) line has been proposed, extending the total project length to 72 km.
“The spur line will branch off after Jigani towards Anekal, connecting the international stadium directly,” said a senior BMRCL official. “Passengers from Bannerghatta and Anekal will be able to reach the sports complex seamlessly. The mainline will continue on its original alignment, with dedicated services on both routes.”
About the International Sports Complex
The international sports complex, to be developed by the Housing Department, will feature an 80,000-capacity cricket stadium, facilities for 24 indoor and outdoor sports, and a 30,000-seater auditorium. The complex aims to position Bengaluru as a premier sports destination capable of hosting global tournaments and national events.
The metro branch line will ensure last-mile connectivity to the venue, reducing traffic congestion and supporting sustainable transport for large-scale events.
Timelines and Future Plans
BMRCL aims to submit its final feasibility report for the 72-km line to the state government by October 2025. Once approved, the corporation will begin preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) — a process that typically takes around one year.
Subsequently, the project will require clearances from both the state and central governments, which could take an additional two years. If approvals progress smoothly, construction is likely to begin by 2029 and take five to ten years for completion.
The corridor will feature a mix of elevated and underground stretches, making it one of Bengaluru’s most technically challenging metro projects.
Integration with SWIFT City and Bengaluru’s Metro Masterplan
The proposed corridor will also connect SWIFT City, a 1,000-acre integrated township for startups and innovation hubs under development near Sarjapur. This connection is expected to boost connectivity for tech parks, residential enclaves, and industrial clusters along the route.
“The region is still developing, so stations will be spaced farther apart,” the BMRCL official noted. Despite that, the 72-km corridor is expected to have over 50 metro stations, offering significant coverage across southeastern Bengaluru.
This corridor forms a key component of BMRCL’s comprehensive 210.9-km metro expansion masterplan, which includes six extensions and two new lines, bringing the total proposed network length to 467.69 km — on par with the Delhi-NCR metro network’s 467 km.
A Leap Toward a Smarter, Better-Connected Bengaluru
The new Kalena Agrahara–Kadugodi Tree Park line, with its branch to the international sports complex, represents a bold step toward improving urban mobility in Bengaluru. Once completed, it will not only ease traffic congestion but also support the city’s growing role as a hub for technology, sports, and innovation.
With the Namma Metro expansion now integrating major residential, tech, and recreational zones, Bengaluru’s transport infrastructure is set to evolve into one of the largest and most connected metro networks in India.
