In a major stride towards fostering women’s empowerment through education, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina 2.0 scheme in Guwahati. This transformative initiative is designed to boost the enrolment of girls in higher education across the state by offering direct financial support to female students from all socio-economic backgrounds.
The scheme, which falls under the Assam government’s flagship welfare programs, aims to tackle key challenges faced by girls in accessing higher education, especially financial barriers and high dropout rates after secondary school. By encouraging continued education, the scheme not only addresses academic progression but also reinforces the state’s broader commitment to gender equity and socio-economic upliftment.
A Structured Support System Across Education Levels
The Nijut Moina 2.0 scheme offers monthly financial assistance to girl students enrolled in government and government-aided institutions across three academic levels. The benefits are structured as follows:
- ₹1,000 per month for students pursuing Higher Secondary (HS) education
- ₹1,250 per month for those enrolled in graduation programs
- ₹2,500 per month for postgraduate (PG) students
This support will be provided for 10 months each academic year, offering sustained assistance to help families cover basic educational expenses, transportation, and other necessities that often hinder girls from continuing their education.
Wide Reach and Inclusivity
One of the standout features of the Nijut Moina 2.0 scheme is its universal accessibility. Unlike many welfare schemes that are limited by income thresholds, this initiative is open to all girl students, irrespective of their family income. This inclusive approach ensures that even those from middle-income backgrounds, who may struggle with hidden costs of education, can benefit.
With the distribution of application forms already underway across Assam, the state government estimates that more than 4 lakh girl students will be covered in the current academic year. This large-scale rollout highlights the government’s proactive approach to improving educational outcomes and enhancing the status of women in the state.
Reducing Dropout Rates, Building Futures
Assam has witnessed challenges in maintaining the continuity of girl child education beyond school level, often due to socio-economic and cultural pressures. The Nijut Moina 2.0 scheme addresses these issues head-on by incentivizing higher education, thereby contributing to a reduction in early marriage, early pregnancies, and unemployment among women.
Moreover, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the scheme’s role in nation-building, noting that educated women are central to the prosperity and development of a society.
Looking Ahead
Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina 2.0 reflects Assam’s strategic commitment to transforming education and gender equality. It aligns with the broader goals of the National Education Policy and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality).
As the scheme rolls out across Assam, it is poised to become a landmark initiative in empowering the next generation of women leaders, professionals, and change-makers in the region.
