Election Commission Doubles Remuneration for BLOs, Enhances Honorarium for Electoral Roll Officers

In a significant move to recognize and reward the tireless efforts of field-level electoral staff, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a substantial hike in remuneration for Booth Level Officers (BLOs), BLO Supervisors, and for the first time, sanctioned honorarium for Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs).

This revision comes after nearly a decade—the last enhancement was carried out in 2015. The updated compensation structure acknowledges the critical role played by these officials in ensuring impartial, transparent, and accurate electoral rolls, which form the backbone of India’s democratic process.

As per the new structure:

  • BLOs will now receive ₹12,000 annually, up from ₹6,000.
  • The revision incentive for BLOs has been doubled from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000.
  • BLO Supervisors will see their annual remuneration increase from ₹12,000 to ₹18,000.
  • For the first time, AEROs will be provided an annual honorarium of ₹25,000.
  • EROs will also receive a first-time honorarium of ₹30,000 annually.

In addition, the Commission has approved a special incentive of ₹6,000 for BLOs involved in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) beginning from Bihar. This incentive is aimed at acknowledging the additional workload and responsibility undertaken during the SIR exercise.

The decision underlines the ECI’s commitment to strengthening the electoral process by motivating the foundational workforce that ensures eligible citizens are registered and electoral rolls remain accurate and up to date.

Electoral Registration Officers, their assistants, BLO Supervisors, and BLOs perform a host of responsibilities—from door-to-door verification of voter details and facilitating enrollment of new voters to managing corrections and deletions from the rolls. Their work ensures that the democratic rights of millions of Indians are upheld.
