IIT Madras Launches Youth Farming Internship at Youth Farming Conclave 2025

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), in collaboration with We The Leaders Foundation, successfully organised the Youth Farming Conclave 2025 at the IITM Research Park. The event focused on reimagining the role of youth in agriculture and marked the launch of a unique and transformative Youth Farming Internship Programme.

This pioneering programme is designed to immerse young minds in farm-based learning, blending rural wisdom with modern agricultural insights. At the heart of the event was a high-impact panel discussion titled “The Future of Agriculture: How Can Youth Explore, Engage & Empower?”, which brought together experts, farmers, educators, and student innovators to deliberate on reshaping the future of farming through youth engagement.

The Youth Farming Internship Programme will initially be piloted in the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu, where eight Lead Farmers have volunteered to open their farms as learning spaces. These community leaders will serve as grassroots mentors, enabling immersive, hands-on agricultural training for students and young agri-enthusiasts.

According to IIT Madras, the internship model is voluntary and community-led, offering exposure to natural farming practices, rural innovations, and regenerative agriculture. It seeks to create a decentralised network of learning farms and community mentors that can empower the next generation of agricultural changemakers across Tamil Nadu and eventually the country.

The Youth Farming Internship Programme will be available in two flexible formats:

  • 7-Day Full-Time Internship: A deep-dive, immersive experience designed to engage young participants with on-field work in natural farming, eco-friendly methods, and innovation-driven solutions for rural development.
  • 2-Day Weekend Internship: A short-term opportunity for urban youth and students seeking a refreshing and purposeful rural exposure, providing them with insight into sustainable farming and community engagement.

Speaking at the event, organisers highlighted the urgent need to bridge the rural-urban gap in agriculture and instil a sense of purpose and pride among young farmers. The programme aims to revitalise interest in farming as a viable and innovative career path, not just a traditional occupation.

With growing enthusiasm, IIT Madras plans to expand the initiative to more districts, bringing together academia, farmers, and communities to cultivate a new generation of responsible and empowered agripreneurs.
