India Launches E-Passports to Streamline Global Travel Under Passport Seva Program 2.0

In a major digital leap aimed at modernizing travel documentation, the Indian government has introduced electronic passports (e-passports) as part of its broader Passport Seva Program (PSP) 2.0. This initiative is designed to ease international travel, speed up immigration processes, and enhance passport security for Indian citizens.

The pilot rollout of the e-passport began on April 1, 2024, and is currently available at select Regional Passport Offices and Passport Seva Kendras across cities including Chennai, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Nagpur, Goa, Jammu, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, and Ranchi. Citizens in these locations can now apply for e-passports online via the Passport Seva platform.

An e-passport is a technologically advanced version of the traditional passport. Embedded with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and an internal antenna, the passport securely stores critical biometric data, including facial recognition, fingerprints, and iris scans, along with personal details such as name, passport number, and date of birth. These features help enable automated identity verification at global immigration counters, significantly reducing queues and wait times at airports.

The RFID chip, which complies with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, is tamper-resistant and ensures encrypted, contactless data exchange, making the document highly secure and nearly impossible to forge. The front cover of the e-passport bears a gold-colored chip icon, which distinguishes it from regular passports.

With the rollout of e-passports, the Indian government aims to offer citizens a faster, safer, and more convenient travel experience. These upgraded documents are particularly useful for frequent international travelers, as they reduce manual identity checks and lower the risk of identity theft or fraudulent misuse.

While the current rollout is limited to a few cities, the Ministry of External Affairs has plans to expand the issuance of e-passports nationwide in phases. This is a key step in India’s ongoing efforts toward digital governance and global mobility enhancement.

Applicants can now submit their requests through the Passport Seva portal and collect their e-passports from designated PSKs or RPOs. As PSP 2.0 progresses, e-passports are expected to become the standard document for international travel for all Indian citizens
