Automotive Mission Plan 2047: India’s Roadmap to Global Automotive Leadership

The Government of India has launched the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047) as a comprehensive roadmap to transform India into a global leader in the automotive sector by 2047. This strategic initiative aligns closely with the national development blueprint ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’, aiming to position India at the forefront of innovation, sustainability, and international trade in the mobility domain.

BACKGROUND AND RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

AMP 2047 builds on the foundation laid by Automotive Mission Plan 2016-2026, which focused on enhancing India’s role in global value chains through increased value addition, exports, and job creation. With AMP 2047, the government has expanded this vision, placing greater emphasis on advanced technology, product quality, and environmental sustainability. To drive the initiative, seven expert sub-committees have been constituted, comprising members from government ministries, industry associations, academia, and think tanks.

OBJECTIVES AND STRATEGIC FOCUS

The core objectives of AMP 2047 include:

  • Boosting sectoral growth and India’s global market share in automotive exports.
  • Driving technological innovation in electric vehicles, hydrogen mobility, and autonomous systems.
  • Promoting cleaner fuels and building sustainable infrastructure, such as nationwide EV charging networks.

Rather than focusing on specific companies or products, AMP 2047 envisions India’s holistic global positioning in automotive manufacturing and engineering. The plan also supports smart manufacturing, green technologies, and improved quality assurance standards.

STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT

The mission is a multi-stakeholder effort. Key participants include:

  • Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and auto component suppliers
  • Industry bodies like SIAM, ACMA, CII, and FICCI
  • Multiple ministries such as Road Transport and Highways, Power, Commerce, and Petroleum & Natural Gas
  • Testing agencies, academic institutions, and research think tanks

This collaborative framework ensures that AMP 2047 is dynamic, inclusive, and forward-looking.

MILESTONES AND TIMELINE

Clear milestones for 2030, 2037, and 2047 have been laid out, focusing on phased advancements in production, technology adoption, export expansion, and employment generation. The plan envisions India becoming a global hub for engineering, R&D, and sustainable automotive solutions.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

AMP 2047 addresses challenges such as rapid technological change, infrastructure limitations, and global competitiveness. It turns these into opportunities by promoting clean energy mobility, quality manufacturing, and skills development. With a clear, structured vision, AMP 2047 aims to place India in the driver’s seat of the global automotive future.
