In a landmark move, Gujarat has become the first state in India to officially align with the Cruise Bharat Mission, launched by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on September 30, 2024. This strategic initiative marks a major step in India’s vision to transform into a global cruise tourism hub by boosting cruise passenger traffic tenfold by 2029.
The Cruise Bharat Mission, spearheaded by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, aims to develop state-of-the-art infrastructure, promote sustainable cruise tourism, and tap into India’s vast and underutilized coastline. Gujarat’s early participation reflects its maritime foresight and strong commitment to tourism and economic development.
GUJARAT’S CRUISE CIRCUIT PLAN
As part of its collaboration with the Cruise Bharat Mission, Gujarat is planning to establish multiple coastal cruise circuits that will connect key cultural and scenic destinations such as Diu, Porbandar, Dwarka, and Padala Island. These circuits are set to offer both short-haul and extended cruise experiences that blend leisure, spirituality, and heritage tourism.
By linking ancient cities like Dwarka, known for its mythological significance, with scenic coastal spots like Diu and Padala Island, Gujarat intends to offer unique experiences to domestic and international tourists alike. This strategic alignment will not only diversify the state’s tourism portfolio but also create thousands of jobs in related sectors, including hospitality, transport, and retail.
BOOSTING GUJARAT’S MARITIME ECONOMY
Beyond tourism, the move is also a boost to Gujarat’s maritime economy. Already home to some of India’s most prominent ports, the state is well-positioned to develop dedicated cruise terminals, ship repair facilities, and marina services. Investments in coastal infrastructure will further reinforce Gujarat’s position as a maritime powerhouse.
Furthermore, the initiative is expected to promote sustainable tourism, attract private investments, and improve local livelihoods along the coastline. By capitalizing on the central government’s vision and support, Gujarat is setting a precedent for other coastal states to follow.
A MODEL FOR THE FUTURE
With this proactive step, Gujarat has positioned itself as a trailblazer in India’s cruise tourism renaissance. As the Cruise Bharat Mission gains momentum, Gujarat’s efforts are likely to serve as a model for other states, showcasing how coastal development can seamlessly merge economic growth with cultural promotion and environmental stewardship.
