In a major step toward sustainable transportation and environmental protection, India has launched its first electric truck scheme under the PM E-DRIVE initiative, with a maximum incentive of ₹9.6 lakh per vehicle. Announced by Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, the scheme aims to transform India’s freight sector by promoting the adoption of electric trucks in the N2 and N3 categories, which include medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
This landmark initiative targets the deployment of 5,600 electric trucks across the country in the first phase and is designed to replace heavily polluting diesel trucks with cleaner, zero-emission alternatives. To avail the incentive, operators must scrap their old diesel trucks, ensuring a reduction in vehicular emissions and aligning with the government’s larger push for green mobility.
The scheme has gained support from major industry players such as SAIL, Tata Motors, and Ashok Leyland, who are expected to play a crucial role in scaling up the production and adoption of electric trucks. These companies will not only manufacture advanced electric freight vehicles but will also contribute to building the necessary charging infrastructure and service ecosystems.
The scheme is structured to uphold quality and reliability, with strict warranty regulations imposed on manufacturers. These include minimum warranty periods on key components such as the battery, motor, and drivetrain, ensuring that fleet owners receive durable and efficient vehicles. The scheme also includes provisions for tracking the performance and efficiency of the electric trucks to ensure real-world sustainability outcomes.
The PM E-DRIVE electric truck scheme directly supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) mission by encouraging domestic manufacturing of electric vehicles and components. It also aligns with India’s ambitious net-zero emissions goal by 2070, contributing significantly to reducing the carbon footprint of the transport sector, which is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases.
This initiative marks a transformational shift in India’s approach to commercial transport, combining economic development with environmental responsibility.
