National Unity day (also called Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) is celebrated each year on 31st of Oct by the folks throughout India. it is celebrated to commemorate the birth day of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who very unified the country. The Statue of Unity is a monument dedicated to Patel, located in the Indian state of Gujarat.He is also known as the Iron Man of India &a famous personality for uniting India. He really worked arduous hard to keep united.

HISTORY
Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day was introduced by the govt of India in 2014 with the aim of celebrating this event each year on 31st Oct. This year India will observe 145th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, who strived to bring the 562 princely states of India into a unified country. Patel was a successful lawyer and became one of the influential leaders in Gujarat. He was then appointed as the 49th President of Indian national congress, he even promoted the Quit India Movement during that time. Patel played an important role in India’s freedom movement. The National Unity Day is thus observed to remember the efforts of Sardar Patel for the nation.
The aim of introducing this event is to pay tribute to the good man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his birth day by memory his extraordinary works for the country. Every year the educational institutions observe various kinds of programmes in schools, colleges and various institutes across the country. The motto of the day is to re-affirm the strength and resilience of the nation so as to withstand any upcoming potential threats to the unity, integrity, and security of our country.

It is very important to maintain unity. So, to establish the unity of the nation, the Government of India proposed the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas On that day, people remembered the great works of Sardar Patel and acknowledge them by celebrating Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. People gathered and celebrate the unity of the nation by delivering speeches, spread knowledge etc. Different events, webinars and seminars are organized in different parts of the country.It was necessary for the Indians to come together and fight for their Rights and Opportunities to remove the Britishers from the Indian Nation.
Every year this day is celebrated with different themes and mottos. The theme for this year 2020 is – “Unity in diversity is better that, unity in similarities.”

Major causes of threats to unity in India are,
- Threats from outside countries due to conflicts like the border conflict.
- Terrorist activities like killing people, destroying bridges and buildings using landmines etc.
- Casteism which has its evil elements like untouchability, less importance to the lower castes etc.
- Regionalism creates different divisions and develops a regional feeling neglecting the principle of nationalism.
- Communalism (communal riots causes serious threats to our unity).
- Language controversy due to the multiplicity of languages. It was seen when Hindi was provided with the place of official language. South Indian revolts against it.
To increase National Unity in India:
- Starting from home, parents and society should be very much responsible to develop a child in the right direction with noble thoughts.
- Conflicts between states, districts, villages should be resolved with better understanding without taking any harmful step to disturb bonding, which at the end decreases the national unity of our country.
- Get in touch with the current affairs, watch the news, read a newspaper. So that it will help us to improve our mentality towards nationality and to relate better with the problem of our nation.
- Wipeout un-education problem in India by educating the people of rural areas, inter areas and focusing more on educating the illiterate parents.
- we are only Indians. We must be integrated emotionally for the sake of peace and prosperity of our nation.
