In a significant move to elevate school education standards, the Maharashtra government has partnered with Khan Academy and the Sri Sri Rural Development Trust (SSRDT) to enhance mathematics and science learning for students from Classes 1 to 10. The initiative combines cutting-edge technology and experiential learning to create a more engaging, effective, and holistic educational experience for students across the state.
The Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were formally signed in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who hailed the collaboration as a transformative step in the state’s education journey. “This is a crucial step towards making education more engaging and effective for students. These partnerships will play a vital role in nurturing curiosity and talent amongst young learners,” said the Chief Minister.
As part of the collaboration with Khan Academy, Maharashtra will implement the Dr. Jayant Narlikar Maths and Science Learning Enhancement Programme. This three-year programme, led by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), will offer curriculum-aligned content in both Marathi and English. The content will include video-based and self-paced modules aimed at deepening students’ conceptual understanding of key subjects.
Simultaneously, SSRDT—an initiative of the Art of Living Foundation—will focus on the comprehensive development of 150 government schools, especially in rural areas. Their model, rooted in experiential learning, will address multiple facets of the school ecosystem. Key elements of the SSRDT collaboration include school development planning, infrastructure upgrades, teacher training, student skill development, and enhanced community involvement.
The initiative will begin with model schools under the School Complex framework introduced in the National Education Policy (NEP), including the centrally-supported PM Shri and state-led CM Shri schools. These institutions will serve as hubs for demonstrating best practices and scalable models for wider educational reform.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, this dual-pronged strategy aims to not only boost academic performance in maths and science but also create an enabling environment for overall school improvement. By combining tech-driven content with grassroots-level capacity building, Maharashtra is positioning itself at the forefront of educational innovation in India.
This strategic partnership reflects a broader national vision for inclusive, quality education, and could become a blueprint for other states seeking to balance digital learning with localized, holistic educational development.
