In a major leap toward India’s clean energy transition, L&T Energy GreenTech (LTEG), a wholly owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro, has announced plans to establish India’s largest green hydrogen plant at the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) refinery in Panipat, Haryana. The project will supply an impressive 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually for the next 25 years, operating under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model.
This strategic partnership marks a critical milestone in advancing India’s ambitions under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position the country as a global hub for green hydrogen production and export. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy through electrolysis, is poised to play a key role in decarbonizing sectors like refining, steel, and transportation.
The plant at Panipat will be powered entirely by renewable energy sources, ensuring a fully green and sustainable hydrogen production process. LTEG will utilize indigenously developed high-pressure alkaline electrolysers manufactured by L&T Electrolysers Ltd at its Hazira facility in Gujarat. This not only promotes self-reliance in clean energy technology but also supports the broader vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
The project is expected to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of IOCL’s Panipat refinery, which is among the largest in India, by replacing a portion of its conventional hydrogen consumption with green hydrogen. The initiative also demonstrates a successful collaboration between the public and private sectors in meeting climate targets and accelerating energy diversification.
By combining domestic manufacturing, clean technology, and long-term operational strategy, this venture underscores L&T’s commitment to spearheading India’s renewable energy revolution. It further reinforces India’s intent to scale up green hydrogen infrastructure and reduce dependency on fossil fuels, aligning with global climate commitments and national sustainability goals.
Industry experts view the Panipat project as a game-changer for India’s hydrogen economy, paving the way for similar large-scale green hydrogen initiatives across the country. As the world pivots toward low-carbon energy solutions, L&T’s leadership in this domain places India firmly on the global map of clean energy innovation.
