Bihar Hikes Journalist Pension to ₹15,000 Under Journalist Samman Pension Scheme

In a major welfare move announced on July 26, 2025, the Bihar government has raised the monthly pension for retired accredited journalists from ₹6,000 to ₹15,000 under the Bihar Patrakar (Journalist) Samman Pension Scheme. The revised benefits also extend to dependents of deceased pensioners, who will now receive ₹10,000 per month instead of the previous ₹3,000

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

Pension for Retired Journalists: Eligible journalists registered under the government’s pension scheme will now receive ₹15,000 monthly, an increase of ₹9,000 from the earlier amount .

Family Pension: In the event of a pension recipient’s death, their dependent spouse will get ₹10,000 per month for life, up from ₹3,000.

GOVERNMENT MESSAGING AND RATIONALE

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, announcing the hike, emphasized journalists’ vital role in democratic society, calling them the “fourth pillar of democracy.” He underlined that ensuring financial security post-retirement honors their contributions and supports their dignity and independence

The government has already instructed the Information and Public Relations Department to implement the new pension rates promptly

This announcement arrives months ahead of the Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, expected in October–November 2025, and is seen by analysts as a strategic outreach to the media community. Many observers note that journalists wield influence over public opinion, making this move politically impactful

Journalist groups and media associations in Bihar have welcomed the move, calling it a meaningful recognition of their long-standing service. The hike is expected to boost morale among retirees and offer better financial stability to those relying on the pension as a primary source of income.

This measure aligns with a broader trend in Bihar’s recent welfare policy:

The June 2025 social security pension for senior citizens, widows, and persons with disabilities was raised from ₹400 to ₹1,100 .

Earlier pension coverage benefitting over 1.09 crore individuals was expanded through higher budgetary provisions and streamlined DBT transfers

The pension hike under the Journalist Samman Pension Scheme marks a significant milestone in Bihar’s welfare policymaking, reinforcing the state’s commitment to the dignity and security of journalism professionals.
