In a humanitarian initiative, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has appealed to all its employees to donate one day’s salary to the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to help citizens affected by the recent devastating floods across several districts of the state. The move aligns with the Maharashtra government’s call for collective responsibility in assisting those impacted by heavy rains and severe flooding.
PMC Employees to Contribute One Day’s October Salary
Naval Kishore Ram, the Municipal Commissioner of Pune, announced that the contribution would be deducted from employees’ October salaries. “It is a national responsibility to help those who are suffering due to flooding in the state,” Ram said, urging civic employees to support the initiative wholeheartedly.
He clarified that the donation amount would be equivalent to one day’s pay, which would be automatically deducted from salaries at the end of the month. However, employees who do not wish to participate can submit a written request to opt out of the deduction.
“The donation should be from the salary of October month. The civic administration should calculate a day’s salary and cut it from the pay to be given by the end of the month,” Ram stated in an official communication.
To acknowledge contributors, PMC has decided to issue certificates to all participating employees so they can claim tax benefits under the Income Tax Act.
Maharashtra Government Calls for Statewide Support
Earlier this month, the Maharashtra state government had made a similar appeal to all state government employees, urging them to donate a day’s salary to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to support ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
“The situation that has arisen due to the natural calamity of heavy rain in the state recently requires collective action,” the government resolution stated. “All state government employees should participate in providing relief to the affected citizens and donate their one-day salary in the CM Relief Fund.”
This coordinated appeal by both the state and municipal administrations demonstrates a united effort to mobilize resources for disaster relief and rehabilitation.
Floods Cause Widespread Damage Across Maharashtra
Several parts of Maharashtra, including Pune, Sangli, Kolhapur, Nashik, and Solapur, have witnessed unprecedented rainfall and flash floods over the past few weeks. The torrential downpour has destroyed homes, displaced families, and washed away fertile farmland, severely affecting agricultural productivity.
According to state estimates, nearly 50 lakh hectares of farmland have been damaged due to incessant rain and flooding. In response, the state government announced financial assistance packages for the affected citizens. However, opposition parties have criticized the compensation as insufficient compared to the enormous losses suffered by farmers.
State Seeks Additional Aid from Centre
Last month, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting the release of additional funds from the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF). In his letter, Fadnavis highlighted the magnitude of the agricultural losses, emphasizing the need for urgent central assistance to restore livelihoods.
Collective Effort Toward Relief and Rehabilitation
The PMC’s appeal to its workforce reflects a broader ethos of social responsibility and solidarity. By encouraging employees to donate a day’s salary, the civic body aims to contribute meaningfully to the state’s flood recovery mission and support thousands of families who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
As Maharashtra continues to battle the aftermath of the floods, the initiative underscores the importance of collective civic action, compassion, and collaboration between citizens, government agencies, and institutions in rebuilding affected communities.
