UGC Extends ODL and Online Admission Deadline for July–August 2025 Session

UGC Extends ODL and Online Admission Deadline for July–August 2025 Session

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially extended the admission deadline for Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online programmes for the July–August 2025 academic session. The new deadline is now October 15, 2025, replacing the earlier cutoff of September 15, 2025. This decision was taken following multiple requests from higher educational institutions (HEIs) seeking additional time to complete the admission process.

UGC Admission Extension 2025 – Key Highlights

According to the official UGC notification, all HEIs offering UGC-recognised ODL and online courses must strictly adhere to the revised admission schedule. The extension gives students and institutions additional time to complete the application and enrollment process for the upcoming academic session.

This move benefits students who were unable to apply earlier due to delays in documentation or decision-making, while also providing universities with the flexibility to accommodate more applicants.

UGC Ban on Healthcare and Allied Disciplines in ODL/Online Mode

In addition to extending the admission deadline, the UGC has reinforced its earlier decision regarding programmes in healthcare and allied disciplines. Starting from the 2025–26 academic session, institutions will no longer be permitted to offer these courses via ODL or online learning under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021.

The decision was finalised during the 592nd UGC meeting on July 23, 2025, based on the recommendations of the 24th Distance Education Bureau Working Group meeting held on April 22, 2025.

Courses Banned in ODL/Online Mode

The following programmes will not be allowed in distance or online learning format:

  • Psychology
  • Microbiology
  • Food and Nutrition Science
  • Biotechnology
  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Dietetics

Any recognition already granted to HEIs for running these programmes in ODL or online mode will be withdrawn. Moreover, institutions have been instructed not to admit students into these restricted programmes from the July–August 2025 session onwards.

UGC Advisory on Unrecognised Collaborations

In a related directive, the UGC has issued a public advisory warning students and higher education institutions against engaging in unrecognised collaborations with foreign educational providers. The commission has made it clear that any degree, diploma, or certificate obtained through such arrangements will be considered invalid in India.

This move comes as part of UGC’s ongoing efforts to ensure that students pursue only approved and recognised programmes to avoid difficulties in employment, higher education, or professional recognition later.

Impact of UGC’s Decision on Students and Institutions

  • Students: The extension of the admission deadline to October 15, 2025 provides extra time to secure admission in recognised UGC ODL and online programmes. However, students aspiring for healthcare-related courses must now explore regular classroom programmes, as these will not be available in distance or online formats.
  • Institutions: Universities and colleges must align their offerings strictly with UGC directives. Institutions running unrecognised or banned courses face the risk of losing UGC recognition.

The UGC admission extension 2025 comes as a relief for students and HEIs, offering flexibility in the enrollment process for ODL and online courses. At the same time, the ban on healthcare and allied disciplines in ODL/online mode reinforces UGC’s focus on maintaining quality and compliance in higher education. Students are strongly advised to apply only for UGC-approved programmes before October 15, 2025, and avoid unrecognised collaborations to ensure their degrees remain valid in India.
