BSNL Launches Nationwide Network-Side Anti-Spam and Anti-Smishing Protection for Mobile Users

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the nationwide roll-out of its advanced network-side anti-spam and anti-smishing protection for mobile subscribers, marking a significant step towards enhancing consumer safety in India’s telecom sector. The system, now live across BSNL circles, is designed to block suspicious and phishing URLs in SMS messages at the network edge—ensuring that malicious links never reach the end user.

The Ministry of Communications confirmed the launch on Thursday, August 14, 2025, stating that the initiative is part of BSNL’s ongoing cutovers to improve customer security. Legitimate communications—such as OTPs, banking alerts, and government notifications—will continue to be delivered as per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC) framework.

Technology and Partnership

The system has been developed in collaboration with India-based cloud communications provider Tanla, combining multiple advanced technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), reputation intelligence, and link expansion. These tools work in real time to detect and block malicious content before it reaches the user.

This protection integrates seamlessly with the blockchain-based DLT system adopted by Indian telecom operators to curb spam and fraudulent messages. It represents a technological upgrade from traditional spam filters by specifically targeting smishing—a form of phishing that uses SMS to trick recipients into revealing personal or financial information.

Proven at National Scale

BSNL’s system, previewed during India Mobile Congress 2024, has already demonstrated impressive results. According to the operator, the solution:

  • Detects over 1.5 million scams daily
  • Identifies more than 35,000 unique fraudulent links per month
  • Flags over 60,000 scam-related WhatsApp and mobile numbers monthly

Powered by four proprietary AI/ML engines, the platform delivers over 99% efficacy against smishing threats. Its national-scale deployment ensures that all BSNL subscribers—without any need for app installations or settings adjustments—are automatically protected.

How It Works

When an SMS containing a link is sent to a BSNL subscriber, the system analyses the URL in real time. If the link is flagged as suspicious or linked to phishing activity, the SMS is blocked at the network level. This prevents credential theft and payment fraud by ensuring harmful messages never reach the recipient’s device.

The protection extends beyond SMS detection to integrate with major web and messaging platforms, enabling BSNL to counter new and evolving digital threats.

A Safer Digital Environment

The Ministry of Communications emphasized the initiative’s importance, noting: “If you are a BSNL customer, malicious-link SMS are automatically blocked at delivery, materially reducing the chance of credential theft and payment fraud.”

This nationwide roll-out aligns with the government’s broader vision to strengthen cyber hygiene, safeguard digital transactions, and protect citizens from online fraud. With smishing attacks growing in sophistication, BSNL’s proactive approach sets a precedent for the Indian telecom industry and reinforces the critical role of AI-driven network security in safeguarding consumers.
