Government Launches Apna Ghar Resting Facilities for Truck Drivers

In a landmark move to uplift the lives of India’s truck drivers and boost road infrastructure, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has launched the ‘Apna Ghar’ initiative—a nationwide programme aimed at providing safe, clean, and well-equipped resting spaces for long-distance drivers. As of July 2025, a total of 368 units with 4,611 beds have been established along major national highways, offering much-needed respite and dignity to the backbone of India’s road transport sector.

The ‘Apna Ghar’ facilities have been strategically developed at fuel stations and rest stops, catering to the welfare of truck drivers who often endure grueling journeys with little access to basic amenities. These centres are equipped with spacious dormitories, well-maintained dhabas, clean toilets, bathing facilities, designated cooking areas, and purified drinking water. Some centres also provide first-aid kits and basic health check-up stations, addressing both the physical well-being and safety of the drivers.

The initiative is supported by a dedicated mobile app that allows drivers to locate nearby ‘Apna Ghar’ units, check for available beds, leave feedback, and access other helpful services. The app’s user-friendly design and multi-language support have made it especially useful for India’s diverse trucking community. Since its launch, the programme has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the drivers, many of whom have expressed gratitude for the improved working and resting conditions.

Truck drivers—often hailed as the silent lifelines of the economy—have long struggled with unsafe and unsanitary roadside conditions. Many are forced to sleep in their vehicles or resort to makeshift arrangements with no access to proper toilets or food. ‘Apna Ghar’ aims to change this narrative by offering drivers a place that not only serves as a shelter but also restores dignity, hygiene, and rest—essentials for safe driving and mental well-being.

Officials from the Ministry noted that this initiative is part of a larger strategy to modernize highway infrastructure, reduce road fatigue-related accidents, and enhance logistics efficiency. Clean rest spaces contribute directly to reducing driver fatigue, which is a major cause of road mishaps involving heavy vehicles.

The government has also indicated plans to expand the ‘Apna Ghar’ network in the coming years, targeting underserved routes and incorporating additional services such as medical assistance, counseling, and even skill development modules in the future.

Transport unions, logistics companies, and civil society groups have lauded the government’s proactive approach, calling ‘Apna Ghar’ a game-changer for India’s road transport sector. Many stakeholders believe it sets a precedent for worker-centric infrastructure development and aligns with the government’s broader vision of inclusive growth and social security for all working classes.

In essence, ‘Apna Ghar’ is more than just a resting stop—it is a home away from home for India’s truck drivers, reinforcing respect, recognition, and relief for the people who keep the country’s supply chains moving.
