Malta to Host 8th Commonwealth Youth Games in 2027

Commonwealth Sport, the London-based governing body formerly known as the Commonwealth Games Federation, has announced that Malta will host the 8th Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in 2027. This landmark decision reflects the organization’s commitment to expanding the reach of the Games into new regions, especially small and island nations.

Scheduled to be held across the islands of Malta and Gozo, the 2027 CYG will feature four main venue clusters. Two Athlete Villages will be established using hotels on both islands, offering young athletes a comfortable and integrated experience during the multi-sport event.

More than 1,000 athletes, aged between 14 and 18, representing 74 Commonwealth countries and territories, are expected to participate. These young talents will compete across eight sporting disciplines, including Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, Netball, Squash, Triathlon, Weightlifting, and two exciting debut sports—Sailing and Water Polo. The inclusion of sailing and water polo aligns perfectly with Malta’s rich maritime heritage and warm coastal climate.

The 2027 edition will make history by featuring the largest Para sport programme ever included in a Commonwealth Youth Games. This expansion builds on the foundation laid during the 2023 CYG in Trinidad and Tobago, which introduced para-athletics for the first time. The Malta Games will see the debut of para-swimming, cementing the CYG’s role as an inclusive platform for young athletes of all abilities.

Commonwealth Sport President Dame Louise Martin hailed the decision as a step forward in ensuring wider representation and promoting youth development through sports. She emphasized that hosting the Games in Malta offers a unique opportunity to inspire the next generation of Commonwealth athletes and foster unity among diverse nations.
