PM Modi Releases ₹1,000 Commemorative Coin Honouring Rajendra Chola I's Naval Legacy

In a historic tribute to India’s rich maritime past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a ₹1,000 commemorative coin at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, marking the 1,000th anniversary of the legendary naval expedition led by King Rajendra Chola I. The event, held amidst cultural grandeur, celebrated the Chola Empire’s unmatched prowess in maritime trade, warfare, and overseas expansion during the 11th century.

The proposal to mint and release this commemorative coin was made by R. Komagan, Chairman of the Gangaikondacholapuram Development Council Trust, who also conceptualised and designed the coin. The coin features an evocative image of King Rajendra Chola I on horseback, symbolising strength and leadership, with a ship in the background, representing his historic naval expedition that extended the Chola influence to Southeast Asia, including modern-day Indonesia, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka.

Unveiling the coin, Prime Minister Modi said the commemoration is a proud moment not just for Tamil Nadu, but for all Indians, as it reminds the nation of its glorious maritime history, technological sophistication, and global connections long before the modern era. “India’s naval capabilities are not new—we are heirs to a great legacy,” the Prime Minister said, acknowledging the Chola dynasty’s role in shaping India’s strategic and cultural outreach.

The ₹1,000 commemorative coin is not just a numismatic artifact but a symbol of national pride and historical recognition. It aims to revive public awareness of India’s ancient naval traditions and the vision of King Rajendra Chola I, who built one of the largest and most influential navies of his time.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the capital city built by Rajendra Chola I after his victorious overseas campaign, served as a fitting location for the coin’s release. The ancient site is revered for its architectural grandeur and historical significance, and this new initiative adds a modern cultural milestone to its legacy.
