Maharashtra Declares August 7 as “Sustainable Agriculture Day” to Honor Dr. M. S. Swaminathan

The Maharashtra government has officially declared August 7 to be observed annually as “Sustainable Agriculture Day”, commemorating the birth centenary of Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, the visionary scientist widely regarded as the architect of India’s Green Revolution. The decision pays tribute to his transformative contributions to agricultural science and food security in India.

Dr. Swaminathan’s groundbreaking research in increasing the productivity of wheat and rice played a pivotal role in turning India from a food-deficient nation into one that is self-sufficient in staple crops. His innovative use of high-yielding varieties, scientific farming methods, and policy advocacy laid the foundation for agricultural resilience and economic stability in the post-independence era. In recognition of his monumental service to the nation, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 2024.

Announcing the decision, the Maharashtra government stated that Sustainable Agriculture Day will serve as a platform to promote eco-friendly farming practices, scientific innovation, and sustainable development in agriculture—principles that Dr. Swaminathan championed throughout his life.

To further preserve and propagate his legacy, the state will establish Dr. M. S. Swaminathan Bio-Happiness Centres at all agricultural universities in Maharashtra. These centres will serve as hubs for research, farmer training, and awareness programs focused on sustainable agriculture, climate-resilient crops, and bio-diverse farming systems.

“Dr. Swaminathan’s vision of sustainable and inclusive agricultural development remains more relevant than ever, especially in the face of climate change and ecological challenges,” said a spokesperson from the Maharashtra Ministry of Agriculture. “By institutionalizing his legacy, we aim to inspire future generations of scientists and farmers to follow the path of innovation and environmental stewardship.”

Agricultural experts and farming communities have welcomed the announcement, noting that Swaminathan’s advocacy for the rights of small and marginal farmers, nutritional security, and sustainable practices continues to influence policy and field-level decisions across India.

The annual observance of Sustainable Agriculture Day on August 7 will include seminars, exhibitions, farmer dialogues, and student competitions across the state. It aims not only to honor a scientific legend but also to galvanize action towards creating a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable agricultural future for Maharashtra and the country at large
