UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the United Kingdom will formally recognise a Palestinian state if Israel fails to halt its military operations in Gaza, abandon annexation plans in the West Bank, and recommit to a peace process aimed at achieving a two-state solution. Speaking during a press conference at 10 Downing Street, Starmer stated that the UK’s recognition of Palestine would be a “measured but necessary step” should Israel continue to ignore international calls for de-escalation and dialogue. He emphasised the UK’s long-standing commitment to a two-state solution, noting that continued military aggression and settlement expansion undermine the prospects for lasting peace in the region.
“As a responsible global actor, the United Kingdom cannot stand by as humanitarian conditions deteriorate and hopes for peace fade,” Starmer said. “We urge the Israeli government to end its military campaign in Gaza, halt the annexation of Palestinian territories, and return to negotiations.”
The announcement comes amid a deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where weeks of Israeli airstrikes and ground operations have resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread displacement.
