PM Modi Releases Commemorative Coin Honouring Rajendra Chola I

In a historic tribute to one of India’s greatest emperors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival at Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Tamil Nadu on July 30, 2025, marking the birth anniversary of Emperor Rajendra Chola I. The event blended devotion, culture, and heritage as it also commemorated the 1,000th anniversary of the emperor’s legendary naval expedition to Southeast Asia.

During the celebrations, the Prime Minister released a commemorative coin in honour of Rajendra Chola I, acknowledging the monarch’s extraordinary contributions to India’s maritime strength and cultural expansion. The highlight of the day included the Prime Minister performing rituals at the Cholisvaram temple, a magnificent monument built during the Chola era. Modi admired the temple’s intricate Dravidian architecture, calling it a symbol of the Chola dynasty’s artistic and engineering excellence.

The grand event was infused with traditional Tamil culture, featuring soul-stirring hymns by odhuvars and a captivating musical performance by maestro Ilaiyaraaja, which paid tribute to the cultural richness of the Chola period. These performances drew widespread appreciation from attendees and highlighted the deep spiritual and cultural continuity of Tamil civilization.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi hailed Rajendra Chola I as a visionary ruler, praising his maritime achievements, architectural legacy, and statesmanship. He described the Chola era as a “golden chapter in Indian history,” noting how the emperor’s naval expeditions expanded Indian influence across Southeast Asia and built enduring connections with countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Cambodia.

The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of preserving and celebrating India’s historical legacies. He called for increased research and global awareness of the Chola dynasty’s impact on art, architecture, governance, and international diplomacy.
