In a major step toward enhancing digital identity experiences in India, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a new mobile application called ‘Aadhar FaceRD’. This innovative app is designed to improve authentication for users who face challenges with fingerprint-based verification — especially senior citizens and individuals with worn or damaged fingerprints.
The app leverages facial recognition technology to authenticate identity, offering a seamless and contactless alternative. According to UIDAI, over 150 million face authentications are currently being processed every month, underscoring the growing adoption of this biometric method.
One of the app’s most notable features is its ability to digitally share Aadhaar details through QR code scanning or generation, eliminating the traditional need to carry physical copies or submit photocopies of Aadhaar cards. This digital sharing is fast, secure, and environment-friendly.
Privacy and security remain top priorities in the new system. The Aadhar FaceRD app empowers users to share only selective data, such as their name, masked Aadhaar number, or address — all based on consent and contextual relevance. This granular control helps minimize the risk of identity theft and misuse by ensuring that only necessary information is disclosed during authentication.
Furthermore, all data exchanges are end-to-end encrypted, and the consent-based architecture ensures that no personal data is accessed or shared without user approval. This approach aligns with India’s evolving digital privacy framework and builds trust among citizens.
The app holds promise across multiple sectors. For frequent travelers, it offers contactless and paperless identification at airports and railway stations, simplifying boarding procedures. For citizens availing themselves of welfare schemes or digital services, it enables smooth, remote Aadhaar authentication — reducing the need for physical visits to Aadhaar centers.
The beta version of the ‘Aadhar FaceRD’ app is currently available on the Google Play Store and is expected to be released on the Apple App Store soon.
By embracing facial recognition and prioritizing privacy, UIDAI’s ‘Aadhar FaceRD’ marks a significant leap forward in India’s digital transformation journey — offering convenience, inclusivity, and enhanced security in identity verification.
