Apple has officially rolled out the public beta of iOS 26, inviting iPhone users to experience its next-generation software before the final release later this year. The update marks a major leap forward for Apple’s mobile platform, introducing a fresh design aesthetic, intelligent system enhancements, and substantial improvements across key apps and services.
The iOS 26 public beta is now available for all users enrolled in Apple’s Beta Software Program. Compatible devices include the iPhone 11 and newer, as well as the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). To install the beta, users can visit official portal, sign in, enable beta updates via Settings > General > Software Update, and then download the beta version.
However, Apple strongly recommends that the beta not be installed on a user’s primary device, as beta builds may contain bugs and incomplete features. Users are also advised to backup their devices using Mac Finder or iCloud, with an archived backup to ensure data can be restored if issues arise.
Bold New Design: Liquid Glass
A key visual change in iOS 26 is the Liquid Glass design language. This system-wide UI overhaul introduces translucent and adaptive visual effects across the Lock Screen, Home Screen, system menus, and app icons, offering a sleeker and more immersive experience.
Apple Intelligence Features
Apple is doubling down on AI with “Apple Intelligence” upgrades in iOS 26:
- Live Translation is now integrated into Messages, FaceTime, and Phone apps.
- Visual Intelligence allows users to ask questions about on-screen content.
- Smarter Shortcuts offer context-aware AI-driven suggestions to boost productivity.
Enhanced Communication
The Phone app receives Call Screening and Hold Assist, while Messages gets several social features such as polls, custom chat backgrounds, and Apple Cash payments. Group chats now support typing indicators and enhanced spam filtering.
Updated Apps and Services
Several native apps are getting upgraded:
- Apple Music now features Lyrics Translation and seamless AutoMix transitions.
- Maps introduces Visited Places, preserving user privacy while improving route suggestions.
- Wallet supports installment payments, updated boarding passes, and broader integration support.
- A new Games app centralizes mobile gaming experiences.
Even CarPlay has been refreshed, now supporting widgets, Live Activities, and pinned conversations.
Apple plans to officially release iOS 26 in September 2025, in tandem with the expected launch of the iPhone 17 series, bringing these powerful new features to millions of users worldwide.
