New UPI Rules from August 1, 2025: What Every User Should Know

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has revolutionized digital transactions in India, becoming an essential part of daily life — from buying vegetables to paying EMIs. With its instant, cashless, and seamless nature, UPI is now a household name. However, starting August 1, 2025, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is introducing new rules that will directly affect how users interact with UPI services.

HERE’S A DETAILED LOOK AT THE MAJOR CHANGES:

Limit on Daily Balance Checks
Until now, users could check their bank balance on UPI apps without any restrictions. Starting August 1, a cap of 50 balance checks per day will be implemented.

Why? This move aims to reduce unnecessary server load, especially during high-traffic periods, and ensures smoother processing of actual transactions.

Limited Account View Access per App
If you use a single UPI app to manage multiple bank accounts, take note: the number of times you can access your account details will now be limited to 25 times per day per app. This is to prevent data overload and maintain app performance.

Autopay Time Restrictions

Autopay features for services like OTT subscriptions, mutual fund SIPs, and EMIs will now function only within fixed time slots. Though the exact windows may vary by service, this change ensures better load management on UPI servers.

Restrictions on Payment Status Checks
Users often check their transaction status multiple times. Going forward, you’ll be allowed to check payment status only three times a day, with at least a 90-second gap between each attempt.

This rule aims to curb traffic on transaction confirmation systems and reduce unnecessary delays.

Cap on Payment Reversals (Chargebacks)
Erroneous or failed transactions typically lead to chargeback requests. Under the new rules, users will be allowed a maximum of 10 chargeback requests in 30 days. This change encourages users to be more vigilant before confirming payments.

These rules may feel limiting at first, but they are part of a larger effort to improve India’s digital payment infrastructure. By reducing server strain and standardizing user behavior, these updates aim to ensure faster, more reliable UPI services for everyone. As UPI continues to grow rapidly, these steps are essential to keep the ecosystem efficient and glitch-free.
