The Ministry of Tourism has launched operational guidelines for the ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI)’ scheme, a transformative initiative aimed at developing select tourist destinations into world-class iconic attractions. This strategic move is part of the government’s broader vision to strengthen tourism infrastructure, enhance visitor experience, and boost India’s position as a global travel hub.
The SASCI scheme provides financial assistance to state governments for the comprehensive development of tourism sites. The scope of funding includes improvements in physical infrastructure, branding and marketing, sustainability initiatives, and enhancements to overall tourist experience. By ensuring holistic development, the scheme aims to create destinations that meet global standards in quality, accessibility, and cultural preservation.
State governments were invited to submit project proposals, which were thoroughly evaluated based on key criteria such as connectivity, ecological sustainability, existing and planned infrastructure, carrying capacity, destination management strategies, long-term impact, and marketing potential. Final approvals are being granted in accordance with the detailed SASCI guidelines, ensuring that each selected destination aligns with national tourism development goals.
According to the Ministry, funding under the SASCI scheme will be available until March 31, 2026, and the responsibility for on-ground project implementation lies with the respective state governments. Projects are expected to be completed within two years of approval, with a strong emphasis on timely execution, quality control, and sustainability.
To further amplify the impact of these developments, the Ministry of Tourism will actively promote the selected destinations through digital campaigns, targeted events, and collaborations with industry stakeholders. The aim is not only to attract domestic and international tourists but also to ensure that these iconic sites reflect India’s rich cultural heritage and natural diversity while supporting local economies.
Officials believe the SASCI scheme will significantly strengthen India’s tourism ecosystem, encourage responsible travel, and generate employment opportunities at the grassroots level. By developing destinations that are both sustainable and globally competitive, the initiative is poised to redefine the travel experience across India.
With well-structured guidelines now in place and funding commitments secured, the SASCI scheme marks a crucial step toward achieving a vibrant, inclusive, and resilient tourism sector in India.
