In a landmark move to digitize early childhood education records, Karnataka has become the first state in India to announce the issuance of the Apar ID (Automatic Permanent Educational Account Registration – APAAR) for children enrolled in Anganwadi centres. This initiative is part of a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Women and Child Development aimed at enhancing the quality and accessibility of education for children aged three to six years.
Until now, Apar IDs were provided only to students in the formal education system—from primary school through higher education. Extending this system to Anganwadi children marks a significant step toward creating a comprehensive and continuous digital education profile for every learner, starting from the foundational years.
The Apar ID acts as a unique lifelong educational identifier, similar to the Aadhaar number. It is designed to record a child’s complete academic journey, including details of monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual assessment results, participation in Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs), and other key educational activities. By maintaining this secure, digital record, the system ensures continuity and consistency in a child’s academic progress.
One of the key advantages of the Apar ID is that it will enhance the monitoring and tracking of children’s educational development across different states and institutions. For instance, if a child relocates due to family or other reasons, their educational data will remain intact and accessible, making school transfers smoother and more efficient. This portability of records eliminates the burden of maintaining paper documents and improves transparency in the education system.
Officials from the Ministry of Education noted that digitalizing early education records will not only assist in identifying learning gaps early but will also support better policy planning and implementation. The integration of Anganwadi children into the APAAR system reflects a broader push toward achieving the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes foundational learning and digital infrastructure in education.
With Karnataka leading the way, the implementation of Apar ID for Anganwadi children is set to revolutionize early childhood education documentation, offering a modern, inclusive, and robust framework for tracking and supporting the educational journey of every child from the very beginning.
