HISTORY

National Mathematics Day was first declared by the Indian government in 2012 to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan.

Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22nd December 1887, in Erode, Tamil Nadu, was a self-taught mathematician whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the field. Despite having little formal training, he produced groundbreaking results in number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions.

In 1912, he worked as a clerk at the Madras Port Trust, where his mathematical abilities were noticed, Joined Cambridge University in 1914, collaborating with Hardy and producing landmark papers in mathematics

Ramanujan’s work gained global recognition when he collaborated with G.H. Hardy, a renowned mathematician at the University of Cambridge. Together, they published several influential papers that revolutionized mathematics.  

Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1918, one of the highest honors in science, also became a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, Tragically, Ramanujan passed away at the young age of 32, on 26th April 1920

Left behind nearly 3,900 theorems, many of which remain influential and are still being studied today, his work continues to inspire mathematicians worldwide.
