Marriage is a lifelong bonding with whom you’ll spend your rest of life. To make every marriage officially legal, Government of India issues marriage certificate to all who will get marry. A marriage certificate is a valid legal document that builds the marital status of a couple. It is considered as vital documentfor all married couples. In India, marriage registration can be done either under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, or under the Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act, 1936.
Though the Hindu Marriage Act is only valid to the Hindus includes Hindu, Buddhist, Jains and Arya Samaj, the Special Marriage Act is applicable to all residents of the country, regardless of religion, caste, and language. The Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act 1936 is applicable to Parsies and Zoroastrians.
ELIGIBILITY
- Bridegroom must have completed 21 years of age.
- Bride must have completed 18 years of age.
IMPORTANCE
The marriage registration certificate is a legal document that acts as proof of marriage. The following are the benefits of having a marriage registration certificate:
- Legally valid evidence of marriage.
- Gives social security and acceptance.
- Essentialfor wife or husband while immigration or visa interviews.
- Necessary for claiming the Bank deposits or Life Insurance benefits when the deposited or the Insurer dies without a nominee or otherwise.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
- Absolutely filled application form signed by both husband and wife.
- Proof of Address: Voter ID/ Aadhaar card/ Passport/Driving License
- Proof for Date of Birth of both husband and wife.
- 2 Passport sized recent photo.
- One marriage photograph.
- Separate Marriage Affidavits in prescribed form from Husband and Wife.
- Aadhaar Card of both Husband and Wife.
- Marriage Invitation Card.
- Keep in mind that all documents must be self-attested.
APPOINTMENT
If you are Hindu then under Hindu Marriage Act, you will get an appointment within 15 days upon online registration, but in case of Special Marriage Act, it may take upto 60 days.
EYEWITNESS
Any person who attended the marriage of the couple can become a witness and they should have a PAN Card and a Proof for their Residence.
APPLICATION FEES
- Rs 100/- in case of Hindu Marriage Act
- Rs 150/- in case of Special Marriage Act
VALIDITY
Marriage certificate is valid forever.
PROCEDURE TO APPLY OFFLINE:
- Marriage registration has to be applied with the respective registrar in whose jurisdiction the husband of wife resides.
- Application should be obtained from the respective office or can be downloaded
- Please make sure you have all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- Complete the application carefully, when you fill the Name of Bride and Groom.
- Submit the application along with essential document to the sub Registrar office along with the witness signatures.
- Applicant will be asked to come to the office on a scheduled date to complete the registration process.
- The Bridegroom and Bride have put their signature in specified field.
- Two copies of the Marriage Certificate will be given to the couple. Rest of copies will be reserved for office Record.
PROCEDURE TO APPLY ONLINE
- Visit the online official website of Karnataka government to apply for Marriage registration.
- Login into the portal by entering username and password if you are an existing user.
- If you are a new user then register yourself.
- Select the name of your district and continue.
- Fill all bridegroom’s details and choose “Registration of Marriage Certificate”
- Fill up Marriage Certificate form and select date of appointment.
- Submit the form by clicking “Submit Application” option.
- A tentative number will be allotted to that will be found printed on the acknowledgement slip and this will complete the application procedure.
- Take a printout of acknowledgment slip and retain that with you for future proceedings.
- On the scheduled date, applicant has to present with witness to the registrar. Kindly submit the printout along with required documents.
- Please follow the guidelines of the authorities to complete the formalities for registration.
- Applicant and witness will be asked to sign on the registry to validate their marriage.
- The certificate will be issued on the same day for the already formalized marriage.
- In case of the application made in advance (before marriage) for the issuance of certificate, authorities will look for any objection from public for 30 days and then the process will be executed on the day of marriage by a assigned authority and the certificate will be issued as applicable.
