Driving motor vehicle is considered as one of the primary skills that everyone needs to learn in today world. However if someone want to become legally able to drive any motor vehicle in India, it is necessary to obtain a driving license from their respective state government. Having a driving license allows an individual drive his motorized vehicle all over India. This rule is applicable for all over India who wants to drive motor vehicles. If you are a resident of Karnataka and till date if you haven’t own driving license then it’s right time to apply for it.
TYPES OF DRIVING LICENSE
Driving License for motorcycles without gear (MCWOG): This type of driving license is issued to the one who want to drive motorcycles with any engine capacity but without gear such as scooters or mopeds. To apply for this type of license, an individual age must be more than 16 years.
Driving License for light motor vehicles (LMV): This type of driving license is issued to the one who want to drive light motor vehicles like car, bike with engine capacity not more than 50cc. To apply for this license, an individual must be more than 18 years of age.
Driving license for transport vehicle: This type of driving license is issued to the one who want to drive heavy motor/ transport vehicles like truck, lorry, etc. To apply for this license, an individual must be more than 20 years of age.
GUIDELINES:
- If you wish to have permanent driving license for transport vehicles in Karnataka, then first apply for a Learner License for Transport Vehicles.
- Please go through the eligibility criteria declared by Indian Motor Vehicles Act (IMV) and Karnataka Motor Vehicle (KMV).
- To apply LLR for gearless two-wheelers, the applicant must be of at least 16 yearsor above.
- For all remaining classes of vehicles, the applicant must have compulsorily completed 18 years of age to apply for an LL.
ELIGIBILITY
- The applicant age must be above 18, if he/she is applying for a vehicle not exceeding the engine capacity of 50CC.
- To apply for a driving license for a commercial purpose then applicant should be above the age of 20 years.
- The applicant should apply for a driving license only after getting a learning license within 180 days of the date of the issue mentioned on your learner’s license.
- The applicant should be familiar with traffic rules and regulations.
- After getting learning license you should practice vehicle on ground for at least 1 month.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
To apply driving license in Karnataka, the applicant needs to submit the below documents at the concerned RTO office.
- Four passport-sized recent photographs.
- Medical certificate in Form 1A and 1 given by any licensed Government doctor.
- Valid documents of the vehicle if you have own vehicle.
- Duly filled license application form.
- Valid Age Proof (SSLC marks card, PAN Card, Voters ID Card, Aadhaar card, etc.)
- Valid ID Proof (Voter ID, Passport, PAN Card or Aadhaar card)
- Residence Proof (Ration card copy, rental/ lease agreement, utility bill, etc.)
- Application Fees
PROCEDURE TO APPLY
- To apply for a learner’s license by offline method, you have to collect an application form, fill it as directed and then submit it to your closest RTO.
- All the documents specified above must be submitted along with the application form.
- Disburse the prescribed fee, which is INR 30 per each class of vehicle.
Once the paperwork is complete, you will be given a date for a preliminary test (written/ verbal based on your qualification), which is basically to make sure that you are aware of traffic rules and regulations and what to do in a road emergency.
Once you clear the test, you will be granted a learner’s license from the RTO, which will be valid for six months. You have six months to practice on the ground and road before sitting for the practical test. It is mandatory that you practice at least for a month before going in for the test.
CHECK STATUS
Learner’s license is given to the candidate soon after he/she clears the preliminary test on the same day. There is no question of checking the learner’s license status. But yes, your learner’s license will be canceled if you fail the test for thrice.
PROCEDURE TO APPLY ONLINE
- Visit the official website of Government of Karnataka Transport Department.
- Fill the online application form and attach all the valid documents.
- Pay the Rs.600 fees.
- After that, the document verification will be done, and then you will be issued the new driving license
DRIVING LICENSE TEST PROCEDURE
Two-wheeler & three-wheeler tests: For this, ground test will be done. In this test, you should ride the bike or auto-rickshaw along with the previously bordered ‘Figure of Eight’ without touching the poles placed at different corners. This shows the examiner how comfortable you are with your vehicle, shifting gears, reversing, bending corners, and so on. After clearing this test, you will be directed for the road test, in which you need to ride for a certain distance on the road complying with all the rules and regulations.
Four-wheeler test: First you will have to appear for the ground test, in which you need to drive the vehicle along the marked ‘H’, without touching the poles. After clearing the ground test, once you clear the ground test, you will be cleared for the road test, which is the final stage.
On giving these tests, if you pass then, you will soon receive your driving license within 1-2 weeks. Failed applicants can appear for retest after 7 days by paying a small fee of Rs.50.
