The Institute of Physics (IOP), Bhubaneswar, an autonomous research institution under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India, has officially announced the opening of admissions for its regular Ph.D. programme for the academic session starting August 2025. Recognized for its excellence in physics research, IOP offers this doctoral program in collaboration with the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a deemed-to-be university under the DAE.
RESEARCH AREAS
The PhD programme at IOP Bhubaneswar provides rigorous training and research opportunities in various frontier areas of physics. Students can pursue advanced research in Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, Biological Physics, Complex Systems, Nano Science and Material Science, Accelerator-based Science

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To be eligible for the PhD 2025 programme, candidates must:
Hold an M.Sc. degree in Physics with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA, Possess a valid CSIR-JRF or UGC-JRF fellowship OR a valid GATE score with a rank up to 500
Final-year M.Sc. students appearing in 2025 may also apply, though their admission will be provisional until the final results are submitted
SELECTION PROCESS
Admissions will be based on a two-stage selection process:
- Written Test: Scheduled on 29 May 2025
- Interviews: To be conducted on 30 and 31 May 2025
Candidates shortlisted through the written test will be invited for the interviews at the IOP campus in Bhubaneswar.
FELLOWSHIP AND FACILITIES
Selected candidates will receive attractive fellowships and benefits:
- ₹38,000 per month for the first two years as Junior Research Fellows (JRF)
- ₹42,000 per month from the third year onwards as Senior Research Fellows (SRF)
- An annual contingency grant of ₹60,000
