In a historic announcement for Asian football, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, in partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), has unveiled the launch of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, a new international football tournament dedicated to fostering the growth and development of football across Southeast Asia.
The announcement was made during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, where FIFA and ASEAN renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in sports development, youth engagement, and regional unity. The MoU was signed by ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, marking a new era of collaboration between the world’s football governing body and one of the most dynamic regional organizations in Asia.
A New Era for Southeast Asian Football
The FIFA ASEAN Cup is designed to bring together national football teams from all 11 ASEAN member states, including East Timor, which was recently admitted as the 11th member of ASEAN. Modeled after the successful FIFA Arab Cup, the ASEAN Cup will serve as both a competitive tournament and a developmental platform to elevate the standard of football in the region.
According to FIFA, the tournament will focus on strengthening national team competitiveness, promoting regional unity through sport, and creating pathways for youth and grassroots football development.
Speaking at the summit, Gianni Infantino emphasized the importance of Southeast Asia in the global football ecosystem.
“The ASEAN region is home to over 650 million passionate fans. The FIFA ASEAN Cup will celebrate this shared love for the game while accelerating football’s growth and inclusivity across all member countries,” he stated.
A Platform for Regional Unity and Growth
The FIFA ASEAN Cup aims to go beyond the pitch by acting as a catalyst for social and economic development through football. The tournament will promote tourism, infrastructure investment, and sports diplomacy, helping countries strengthen cross-border collaboration.
Each ASEAN nation—Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and East Timor—will have an opportunity to host matches and training camps, ensuring widespread participation and regional representation.
The ASEAN Cup will also align with FIFA’s Vision 2030 for Global Football Development, which focuses on inclusivity, sustainability, and youth empowerment.
East Timor’s Entry Adds Symbolic Significance
The timing of the ASEAN Cup announcement, shortly after East Timor’s admission as ASEAN’s 11th member, highlights the region’s growing integration and unity through sport. For East Timor, participation in the ASEAN Cup marks its debut in a major regional football event, offering new opportunities for international exposure and player development.
FIFA and ASEAN: A Continued Partnership
The renewed FIFA-ASEAN MoU emphasizes joint initiatives in capacity building, women’s football, sports education, and digital innovation. It also aims to use football as a tool for social inclusion, youth empowerment, and health awareness.
ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn praised the partnership, saying,
“The FIFA ASEAN Cup will not only elevate football in Southeast Asia but will also strengthen our collective identity as a region united through sport.”
The FIFA ASEAN Cup represents a transformative step for football in Southeast Asia — combining competition, cooperation, and community. As the tournament prepares for its inaugural edition, it is set to inspire millions of fans, boost regional pride, and solidify Southeast Asia’s position on the global football map.
With FIFA and ASEAN joining forces, the beautiful game is poised to become a powerful engine for unity, youth development, and sustainable growth in the region.
