University of East London and NISAU UK Sign Landmark MoU to Strengthen India–UK Education Partnership

In a pioneering move, the University of East London (UEL) and the National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK have signed a sector-first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a transformative model of collaboration focused on the welfare, employability, and success of Indian students in the United Kingdom. The agreement, signed last week at UEL’s Stratford campus, marks a major milestone in India–UK educational relations and student engagement.

The MoU provides a strategic framework to support Indian students throughout their academic journey — from pre-departure preparation in India to career and alumni support post-graduation. According to UEL data, one in every 20 Indian students choosing the UK for higher education is drawn to the university, underscoring its growing popularity and credibility among Indian learners.

Blueprint for Global Student Engagement

Professor Amanda Broderick, Vice-Chancellor of UEL, emphasized the significance of the collaboration, calling it a “blueprint for best practices in international student engagement.” She said,

“Internationally mobile Indian students make a hugely positive contribution to UEL and the wider UK community. Our collaboration with NISAU builds on UEL’s long-standing partnerships across India — from research and innovation collaborations to our pioneering India Industry Advisory Board — all focused on preparing students for global success.”

UEL has strong collaborations with top global employers including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Cognizant, HSBC, Tech Mahindra, and Infosys, co-designing skills pathways and enhancing graduate employability.

Aligned with India–UK Vision 2035

The partnership aligns with the India–UK Vision 2035, a long-term strategic roadmap signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s UK visit, which identifies education and skills as a key pillar of bilateral cooperation.

Sanam Arora, Chair of NISAU UK, said,

“Together, we will ensure Indian students not only achieve academically but also feel a true sense of belonging during their time in the UK. This partnership reflects NISAU’s mission to build a globally respected framework for student welfare and employability, aligned with the India–UK Vision 2035.”

The collaboration strengthens the people-to-people pillar of the India–UK partnership by turning vision into practical action — empowering students, enhancing skills, and deepening collaboration across education and innovation.

India-Focused Research and Social Impact

UEL highlighted several India-centric research and social initiatives already producing meaningful results. The Sugarcrete project, developed with Chemical System Technologies, led to the construction of a school near Delhi and created employment opportunities for local women. Other initiatives such as ORNATE India and Naandi Foundation projects have made significant advancements in healthcare and social development.

Celebrating Educational Excellence: India–UK Achievers Honours 2026

The MoU announcement followed the launch of the 4th India–UK Achievers Honours at the House of Lords in London, coinciding with Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas celebrations. The event marked the opening of nominations for the 2026 awards, celebrating Indian changemakers who have leveraged their UK education to drive global progress in business, science, culture, and innovation.

Lord Jo Johnson, former UK Universities Minister, highlighted the sector’s economic significance, noting that international students contribute £42 billion annually to the UK economy.

Labour MP Sonia Kumar praised the initiative, stating,

“The India–UK Achievers Honours symbolise the deep-rooted partnership between our nations, showcasing education as a driver of diplomacy, innovation, and social progress.”
