DST and British Council Launch “Women in Space Leadership Programme” Under UKIERI

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), India, in collaboration with the British Council, has launched the pioneering “Women in Space Leadership Programme (WiSLP)” as part of the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI). This initiative is aimed at empowering women scientists, researchers, and professionals in the field of space science and technology, while fostering greater collaboration between India and the United Kingdom in the areas of education, research, and innovation.

Empowering Women in Space Science

The Women in Space Leadership Programme (WiSLP) is designed to create opportunities for women leaders in space technology, aerospace engineering, astronomy, and satellite research. By promoting gender equality in the science and technology ecosystem, WiSLP aims to encourage greater participation of women in India’s rapidly expanding space sector.

The program emphasizes:

  • Building leadership and management skills among women in space research
  • Providing mentorship and networking opportunities with global experts
  • Promoting joint Indo-UK research collaborations in cutting-edge space technology
  • Supporting women’s contributions to policy-making, innovation, and entrepreneurship in space science

Significance of UKIERI in Advancing Space Collaboration

Launched in 2006, the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) has been a flagship program to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations through higher education, skill development, and joint research. By introducing WiSLP, UKIERI highlights the growing importance of gender inclusivity in international science and technology partnerships.

The collaboration between DST and British Council reflects India’s commitment to encouraging women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and the UK’s vision of advancing global knowledge exchange. This program will also provide training opportunities for early and mid-career women scientists, enabling them to contribute to ambitious projects in space exploration and satellite missions.

India’s Growing Role in Space Exploration

India’s success in recent missions like Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1 has positioned the country as a rising leader in global space exploration. The WiSLP initiative will ensure that women scientists play a significant role in this growth story by equipping them with skills and opportunities to lead groundbreaking projects.

By promoting women’s leadership in the space sector, India and the UK are also contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focusing on gender equality and international cooperation in science and innovation.

The Women in Space Leadership Programme (WiSLP) marks a milestone in India-UK scientific collaboration. With a focus on capacity building, inclusivity, and innovation, this initiative is expected to:

  • Expand career opportunities for women in space science
  • Encourage Indo-UK academic and research partnerships
  • Strengthen the global competitiveness of India’s space sector
  • Inspire the next generation of young women to pursue careers in aerospace and astronomy

Through DST’s leadership and the British Council’s support, WiSLP will serve as a catalyst for greater participation of women in India’s ambitious journey toward becoming a global space power.
