Maharashtra to Recruit 5,500 Assistant Professors in Senior Colleges Before March 2026

Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil has announced that the state government will recruit 5,500 assistant professors for senior colleges before March 2026. The announcement was made during the 28th convocation ceremony of Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University in Nanded on Saturday.

Patil revealed that the state has approved the recruitment of 5,500 assistant professors along with 2,900 non-teaching staff posts for higher education institutions. Both the Finance Department and the Planning Department have given their consent, clearing the way for the recruitment process. A Government Resolution (GR) will be issued soon, he added.

Recruitment Drive to Strengthen Higher Education in Maharashtra

The minister emphasized that the vacancies for assistant professors in Maharashtra senior colleges will be filled before March 2026, which will significantly boost the academic strength of institutions across the state. He also mentioned that earlier, approval had been given for recruiting 700 assistant professors in universities, but the process was stalled due to suggestions from the then Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan on adopting a different method.

With Acharya Devvrat now appointed as the new Governor, the matter will be reconsidered and expedited. Patil assured that the delay will not affect the upcoming large-scale recruitment in colleges.

Attracting Foreign Students to Maharashtra Universities

Patil highlighted the importance of strengthening universities to attract international students. He said that this year, through one appointed agency, 4,000 students from 65 countries were enrolled in Maharashtra institutions. However, most of them preferred cities like Pune and Mumbai over other regions.

The minister stressed the need to make universities in districts like Nanded more appealing to global students by improving facilities, academic quality, and research opportunities.

Empowering Youth Through Education and Innovation

During his convocation address, Patil motivated students by underlining their role in transforming society. He pointed out that the youth of Maharashtra have immense potential to innovate and lead in fields like technology, entrepreneurship, and research.

“The Maharashtra government has opened doors of opportunities through initiatives like Startup India, Make in India, and Digital India. You have the power to experiment, to innovate, and to carve out new paths. But remember, entrepreneurship and career should always be rooted in values and social responsibility,” he said.

Boost for Employment and Higher Education

The decision to recruit 5,500 assistant professors and 2,900 non-teaching staff is seen as a major step towards addressing faculty shortages and improving the quality of higher education in Maharashtra. This will also open up significant employment opportunities for aspiring academicians across the state.

With the recruitment drive set to be completed before March 2026, higher education stakeholders are optimistic about a positive transformation in Maharashtra’s academic ecosystem.
