Ministry of Tourism Launches Paryatan Mitra / Paryatan Didi to Promote Responsible Tourism

The Ministry of Tourism has launched the National Responsible Tourism Initiative – Paryatan Mitra/Paryatan Didi, a pioneering program designed to make tourism in India more inclusive, sustainable, and service-oriented. This initiative is targeted towards local service providers such as cab and auto drivers, hotel staff, tour guides, street vendors, students, and marginalized communities, ensuring that they play an active role in India’s tourism growth story.

Training Local Stakeholders for Better Tourism Experiences

Under the program, participants receive specialized training on tourism awareness, cleanliness, safety, sustainability, and high standards of hospitality. The goal is to make every interaction a visitor has in India reflect warmth, professionalism, and responsibility. By empowering frontline workers and local communities, the government aims to enhance tourist satisfaction, promote responsible practices, and preserve India’s cultural and natural heritage.

The Paryatan Mitra/Paryatan Didi initiative emphasizes both social and economic empowerment. It creates opportunities for youth and underprivileged groups to contribute meaningfully to tourism while gaining skills for long-term livelihood.

Pilot Projects Across Six Tourist Destinations

The initiative was piloted at six major destinations:

  • Orchha (Madhya Pradesh) – known for its temples and palaces.
  • Gandikota (Andhra Pradesh) – the Grand Canyon of India.
  • Bodh Gaya (Bihar) – a UNESCO World Heritage site and spiritual hub.
  • Aizawl (Mizoram) – a cultural and scenic gem in the Northeast.
  • Jodhpur (Rajasthan) – the Blue City rich in heritage and architecture.
  • Shri Vijaya Puram (Tamil Nadu) – an emerging destination with cultural significance.

Launched on August 15, 2024, the program has already shown promising results. As Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat informed in the Rajya Sabha, over 4,000 individuals have been trained so far, equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to make tourism more safe, responsible, and sustainable.

A Boost for Responsible Tourism in India

The National Responsible Tourism Initiative aligns with India’s vision of “Atithi Devo Bhava” by creating an environment where every traveler feels welcome and safe. By involving local communities directly, it reduces the dependence on external manpower and ensures that the economic benefits of tourism reach grassroots levels.

Moreover, this initiative supports the Swachh Bharat Mission, promotes eco-friendly practices, and encourages sustainable tourism models that minimize environmental impact.

Future Outlook

With its initial success, the Ministry of Tourism plans to scale up Paryatan Mitra/Paryatan Didi across more destinations in India, ensuring that the country builds a strong base of trained service providers. This move is expected to elevate India’s global image as a responsible tourism destination, making it more attractive to both domestic and international travelers.
