Punjab Introduces Entrepreneurship as a Core Subject for Class XI Students

In a groundbreaking move, Punjab has become the first state in India to introduce entrepreneurship as a main subject for Class XI students. The initiative, launched by Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains along with Punjab AAP Incharge Manish Sisodia, is set to begin from the 2025-26 academic year. This reform aims to foster an entrepreneurial mindset among school students, encouraging them to become job creators rather than job seekers.

A Landmark in Indian School Education

Addressing the launch event, Minister Harjot Singh Bains emphasized that the initiative marks a historic milestone in Punjab’s education system, transforming classrooms into incubators of ideas and innovation. By embedding entrepreneurship education into the core curriculum, Punjab seeks to empower students with creativity, resilience, and problem-solving skills, ensuring they are equipped to tackle real-world challenges.

The curriculum has been designed to be experiential and hands-on, moving away from rote learning. Students will form teams, brainstorm and develop business ideas, create prototypes, pitch for seed funding, and even launch their products or services in the market. This approach ensures that learners gain practical exposure to startup culture and innovation at an early stage.

No Exam Burden, Only Practical Learning

Unlike traditional subjects, the entrepreneurship curriculum will not involve stressful exams. Instead, it will follow a school-based evaluation system, focusing on self-assessment, peer evaluation, and teacher or mentor guidance. This ensures that students are assessed on their creative abilities, teamwork, and leadership skills, rather than written test scores.

The subject will have 18 dedicated periods annually, with 3 for theory and 15 for project-based activities, striking a balance between conceptual understanding and practical implementation.

Economic and Social Impact

Highlighting the economic benefits of the program, Bains noted that Punjab has over 2.68 lakh students enrolled across 3,840 senior secondary schools. Even if just 10 percent of these students succeed, the initiative could generate ₹300-400 crore in annual student-led economic activity, significantly contributing to Punjab’s economy.

Moreover, by encouraging youth to start ventures, the initiative is expected to create local jobs, boost community engagement, and strengthen grassroots economic growth. Students will not only become self-reliant but will also play an active role in driving sustainable development in Punjab.

Building on the Punjab Business Blasters Programme

This new subject builds on the success of the Punjab Business Blasters Programme, launched in November 2022 under the Punjab Young Entrepreneurs Programme. The earlier program already demonstrated how school-level entrepreneurship can transform young learners into innovators and leaders. The latest initiative takes this vision forward by embedding entrepreneurship into the mainstream education system.

A Vision for the Future

Minister Bains concluded that this reform will reshape Punjab’s future workforce by nurturing a culture of innovation, decision-making, and self-reliance. Teachers will act as startup mentors, guiding students in turning ideas into reality, while classrooms will serve as mini incubation centers.

With Punjab leading the way, this initiative is expected to inspire other states across India to integrate entrepreneurship education into their school systems, ensuring that the next generation is equipped to create opportunities, generate jobs, and contribute to India’s economic growth.
