NCTE to Launch Online Portal in September 2025 for Final Transition of BA BEd, BSc BEd to ITEP

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has announced that it will launch a new online portal in mid-September 2025 to provide a final opportunity for recognised stand-alone Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) offering 4-year integrated BA BEd and BSc BEd programmes to transition into the 4-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP).

The move is part of NCTE’s efforts to fully implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which envisions ITEP as a transformative course to strengthen teacher training and improve the quality of school education.

ITEP: A Flagship Teacher Education Programme

The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) was introduced as a pilot during the 2023–24 academic session across 42 institutions, including top institutes such as IITs, NITs, central universities, and leading colleges. The course integrates subject knowledge with professional training and is designed to prepare teachers through a 4-year multidisciplinary curriculum.

Following the pilot phase, NCTE made it mandatory for stand-alone TEIs running 4-year integrated BA BEd and BSc BEd programmes to transition into ITEP. Institutions were given three options to comply with the new framework:

  1. Independently transform by offering at least two undergraduate programmes.
  2. Merge with multidisciplinary institutions.
  3. Collaborate with multidisciplinary institutions within a 10 km radius.

NCTE’s Final Opportunity for Transition

In its notice dated August 25, 2025, NCTE stated: “All concerned institutions are advised to be in readiness to apply afresh with all required documents, including proof of being a multidisciplinary institution, as per NCTE guidelines.”

The council stressed that this is the last and final opportunity for TEIs offering 4-year integrated courses to seek recognition under the revised framework. Importantly, institutions that have already been issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) or have successfully transitioned into ITEP will not be required to apply again.

Extension of Transition Timeline

Originally, TEIs were expected to complete the transition by the 2025–26 academic session. However, after repeated requests from stakeholders, the NCTE extended the timeline to the 2026–27 session. The launch of the new online portal in September 2025 marks the final window for institutions to align with the ITEP framework.

A detailed public notice on the functioning of the portal, required documentation, and application process will be issued soon, the council confirmed.

Why ITEP is Significant

The ITEP course is considered a landmark reform in teacher education, aiming to:

  • Integrate subject knowledge with pedagogy.
  • Reduce the time required to become a teacher from five years to four years.
  • Provide students with multidisciplinary learning opportunities in line with NEP 2020.
  • Improve teacher preparedness for 21st-century classrooms.

The NCTE’s online portal for ITEP transition provides a last chance for TEIs offering BA BEd and BSc BEd courses to align with the new framework. With the portal set to launch in September 2025, institutions must prepare their documents and apply promptly. This step marks a decisive move towards the complete roll-out of ITEP by 2026–27, shaping the future of teacher education in India, for more details CLICK HERE
