IIT Madras Develops India’s First Silicon Photonics-Based Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG)

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by developing the nation’s first silicon photonics-based high-speed Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG). This pioneering innovation has been licensed for commercial deployment to Indrarka Quantum Technologies Pvt Ltd under a ₹1 crore agreement, marking a crucial step towards building a secure and self-reliant quantum technology ecosystem in India.

The technology was developed at the Centre for Programmable Photonic Integrated Circuits and Systems (CPPICS), IIT Madras, by a team of experts working on cutting-edge quantum communication and security solutions. The QRNG is based on silicon photonics, a platform that allows the integration of light-based circuits into silicon chips, making the solution scalable, reliable, and commercially viable.

Role of QRNG in Quantum Security

Random number generation is essential for encryption, cybersecurity, financial transactions, and defense applications. Conventional random number generators often rely on algorithms, which can be predicted or compromised. However, a Quantum Random Number Generator uses the principles of quantum mechanics to produce truly unpredictable numbers, ensuring the highest level of security.

The IIT Madras QRNG is capable of generating high-speed, truly random numbers, which can be seamlessly integrated into quantum communication systems, secure key distribution, and national defense applications.

Previous Deployments and Testing

The breakthrough technology has already seen initial applications. A prototype QRNG module was delivered to the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Young Scientist Laboratory for Quantum Technologies (DYSL-QT). This early testing established the system’s potential for defense and high-security sectors.

More recently, an advanced QRNG version was deployed at the Society for Electronic Transactions and Security (SETS), Chennai, for use in quantum security applications, showcasing its robustness and readiness for real-world use cases.

Strengthening India’s Quantum Innovation Ecosystem

With the commercial licensing to Indrarka Quantum Technologies Pvt Ltd, IIT Madras has paved the way for indigenous manufacturing and deployment of quantum-safe solutions. This aligns with India’s National Quantum Mission, which aims to accelerate research and development in quantum computing, cryptography, sensing, and communication.

By bringing silicon photonics into the design, IIT Madras ensures that the technology can be scaled up for large-scale adoption, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for sensitive quantum security tools.

Future Prospects

The commercial deployment of this indigenously developed QRNG is expected to boost India’s digital infrastructure security, financial technology systems, defense communications, and emerging quantum internet projects. It also positions IIT Madras as a leader in quantum photonics research in Asia.
